That is one rumor of the origin of the name. Before Willys-Overland patented the name “Jeep” (many years after the war), you won’t find the name Jeep on any WWII military vehicles or paperwork. And btw, the “GP” in GPW did not stand for General Purpose.
BTW- although not patented until 1950 “Jeep” was used for CJ2A’s

Those pics are awesome!! Willys-Overland filed the trademark for the name "Jeep" in 1943 and as you mentioned, started using it in 1945. Because of some legal issues (conflict over the origin of the name), the trademark wasn't officially granted until 1950. Making 1945-1949 CJ-2As and 1949 CJ-3As official unofficial Jeeps.

Ended up a lot more like the Ford prototype. Your ancestors “powerful engine” helped tip the scale to Willys. ? Dad’s Jeep is officially “Official” ?

Yep. I think Bantam (the picture you have above) should get the credit for the basic body design of what became the WWII military "jeep". Theirs was the 1st military prototype but because of limited manufacturing ability, it's base design was given to Ford and Willys-Overland for their design competition. I agree and think it was the horsepower of the Go-Devil that allowed Willys-Overland to win over Ford. Ford got some revenge by being brought back to the table to make GPW versions of the Willys and by inventing the stamped front grill with the vertical slots. Willys got the last laugh by creating a civilian version of their vehicle and trademarking the word "Jeep" that has lived on ever since.

Yes- per Kaiser Willys it was the “powerful engine” and production capabilities that got Willys picked. Pic isn’t a Bantam, it’s a Willys Quad, very similar….. Bantam

I think that might be the Bantam...or at least a recreation of one.

Here is another reference:

EDIT: my bad. I thought that you were referring to your last photo as a Willys. You are correct that your original photo was a 1940 Willys Quad

Loved the D-18’s PTO, and Warn that made an OD that used the port, or our Chevy powered Willys would have still been slow. ?
