Hi maybe I can find an answer here.
when I put my jeep in reverse, only in reverse sometimes it will have a knocking sound. I have notice it happens when I drive and go a lot of places one the day. I took it to jeep and they said they couldn’t reproduce the sound so they don’t know what’s wrong. I even sent them a video with the sound when in reverse. But once I put it in drive or park it goes away. And it only happen sometimes. If anyone can tell me what it is or might be it would be great. I attached the video. Thank you in advance.

You'll need to reproduce it at the dealer so some guy can crawl under there and locate the source. It sounds loud so it should be easy to find. Go put a bunch of miles on it, get it to happen, and then swing by the dealer so a tech can hear it.

I just spent a week in St. Croix and rented a Wrangler. It was doing exactly the same thing and I heard several other rental Wranglers doing it as well. Sounded like a roller coaster ratcheting up a hill - but only when in reverse. It was completely fine otherwise. The rental I had only had 24,000 miles. Was also the 2.0 with 8 speed. It got me concerned since my personal one is the 2.0. The roads in St. Croix made our Michigan roads look creamy smooth. So maybe something is shaking loose?

Definitely following this thread for future reference!

This happens to my jeep, same exact sound. I don't know what the issue is, but somebody told me to try premium gas, and I did.... Sound almost went away completely. I'm sure its possible it might be just masking a bigger problem.... But whatever, no more knocking noise lol

It's clearly the sound a Jeep makes when it is sad.

The sound is very similar to the one I experience; mine also occurs only occasionally, and it sounds like the distinct, crisp chatter of a diesel engine. I’ve even taken it to the dealership, but the staff there couldn't find any issues. What octane rating of fuel do you typically use? The new 3.6-liter engine features a higher compression ratio; using low-octane fuel can sometimes lead to slight engine knocking—this can happen while driving forward as well, though you might not have noticed it. You should try using a higher-octane fuel.
