Fellow members, I could really use your advice. Just to preface this, I know it ultimately comes down to personal preference and the fact that no one can make the decision but me based on my own circumstances. But I'd still like to hear opinions on the matter. I come from a Ford and Toyota family and currently drive a 19 4runner TRD PRO.

I've bounced back and forth with owning wranglers, had a TJ (golden eagle failed to start once but no other problems), JKU (07 sahara was the worst and had electrical problems so happy to get rid of it, 11 sahara was fine), JKR (10 red and manual was awesome, 12 COD edition and probably one of my favs), JLUR (19 loaded to the brim 3.6l and had the sky one touch option.. was THE best wrangler I've owned and far more capable than my skill but.. also didn't feel like a jeep.. i know you guys know what i mean).

I'll be honest, the reason why I've bounced between so many different wranglers was b/c of eventually getting sick of the road noise, rough ride while daily driving and wanting the latest and greatest. I also cared about my passengers and their comfort so that led from me owning 2dr to the 4dr models. As I've driven other vehicles I've really grown to appreciate what wranglers are and the fun they bring. But I just can never seem to "find the right one". I've also come to accept that there really is no one answer with any vechicle as I've tried to balance cost, reliability, utility, fun, aftermarket support, practicality etc. Between owning wranglers, I've tried to drive Rav4s and Civics, and although they're the "smart" and practical decisions, the car guy in me is just never satisfied.

I have a young one on the way, my first kid.. due in 3 weeks God willing (fingers crossed). Call me sentimental, but I want to be able to share the experiences of growing up in a car family and being able to work on projects together with him. When picking my 4runner, I felt I was ticking off all the boxes with getting something that is reliable, was "newer" with old school charm/ tech, slow depreciation, safety and interior room. But I still have my eyes turned toward the wrangler. Nothing beats taking the doors off, top back, the community and the aftermarket.

I'm itching on trading my 4runner in for a 17/18 JKUR Recon edtion, a JLUR or a JLU Willys. I look to the rubicon and willys editions b/c I'm more of a weekend warrior and although I like to tinker, that's honestly more capability than I would ever need. Part of me is also telling myself to just keep the 4runner and be patient. When it is paid off I'll look into getting a LJ project or revisit above options, or see what the future has in store.

Thanks in advance and looking forward to what you guys and gals have to say.

Edit: I'll also add in that I'm looking at the JK and TJ series b/c as much as I love the advancements of the JL, I yearn for the old school feel of the TJs and JKs where things are simpler to work on from a maintenance perspective.

I have a JLU Sport S and my family loves it. My teenager and toddler are both comfortable in it.

However, we also have a 2020 4Runner for longer trips since it’s way more comfortable and quiet. We use the jeep as the “fun” vehicle so if you’re planning on using it as the family’s primary vehicle, it might not be the best decision.

Possibly pay off the 4Runner then get a cheaper jeep that you can work on?

Listen to this part of you. Taking care of the new baby should become your priority; it'll take up a lot of your "free" time and cost a lot of money. Speaking from experience!

Thanks for the advice everyone. Seems like I'll be joining the Jeep gang a little later on. Think I just needed to hear some objective points of view

I mean, you know what it’s like to own a Jeep. Nothing drastically has changed about your con list, especially going backwards to a JK. Find a sweet grand Cherokee WK2 with quadralift (get that extended warranty though for that airbag system ?).

The paint will bubble on hinges and doors and hood on the JL at some point, not so much on a Toyota. Tough finding deakers willing to repaint only to have if happen again, just a mention, people don’t always realize it’s when not if it happens.

Jeeps aren't for everyone sounds like you should keep the 4runner and buy a Tj or Lj for a weekend ride. Just my 2 cents congratulations on the upcoming birth of your baby

Get a TJ or YJ as a second or third vehicle.

Congrats and good luck. A newborn is quite the life adjustment, at times you may want or need a little break. Taking the top off or tinkering might do the trick. For me enjoying the little things are just as important as the big ones. I’m also 50/50 in making good decisions based on emotions rather than logic ?.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I've come to find I'm not a "full-on" daily jeep guy. I like and admire the ruggedness, aftermarket, and simplicity of the TJs (and JKs?) but the advancement of the JLs and how much better they ride as a daily. Hahaha maybe I'm bipolar or just looking for something that doesn't exist yet.. or I'll just have to wait for the right time to own a jeep again as a secondary vehicle. I appreciate you guys helping me put things into perspective
