Im not a fabricator or vehicle engineer so please take this with a grain of salt if you will.....but I bought the standard through frame 4 bolt hitch for my wifes JK....installed it as one does with the provided bolts...then had a shop weld it for added security and brace in the rear frame and hitch.....I tow my 4200lb bow rider with it..... :like:

grand total - about $200

never had a problem
not gonna lie, its not exactly fun, but im a smart driver/tower and I dont tow it far (50 miles max), and my trailer has electric tandem axle brakes....so it works fine.

buy yourself a bolt on frame hitch (MOPAR catalog), get the tow package, or an aftermarket bumper with built in hitch and have it with those bicycles :like:

Will an aftermarket bolt-on hitch have the same strength/rigidity as the factory option?
I'm thinking about using the hitch to attach the recovery strap for when I inevitably and repeatedly bury it to the axles...
Will the factory hitch be a rated recovery point while the aftermarket wouldn't be?

an aftermarket bolt on OEM style hitch will yes...a bumper integrated hitch no for any 'near max/2000lb+' towing...yes for recovery (check the manf. ratings for bumper integrated hitches tow and pull load specs)

If you bury to the axles you are safe to use a tow hitch for recovery...but I would highly recommend you check any bumper hitches for weight ratings....proper bumper D ring mounts are fine (usually)...but the hitch designs vary and ive seen them bend and mangle before when snatching. (smart jeepers never 'snatch' with force anyways) :like: ask the dude on youtube that lost his lower jaw from a d-ring snap back to the face hole.

CAUTION TO THOSE WITH WEAK STOMACHS! (this is a cut video and doesnt show the ER visit afterwards..despite what the video says...dude did not die)

Would that still have happened with synthetic rope?

not in this case, it wasnt the rope or winch line that broke...it was the d-ring mount/clevis from the truck doing the snatching which came in the windshield and separated the dudes lower jaw from his face.

Just watched the video with a little aftermath of that accident - good lord his face took quite a hit!

Pretty damn graphic stuff right there.

It didn't look like the Jeep was trying to help much. This is why I use synthetic rope. The title said they were using a chain, if that is true, they are idiots.

Currently, the dealer is the only option for a JL specific hitch. However, it's been reported that the JK hitches will work. Those all install with 4 bolts through the frame crossmember, a very simple install. If you just want to have a rack, that's your best bet. If you want to add wiring for a trailer, currently you need to go through a dealer. I'm sure that the various retailers like @Quadratec are working on stocking them, however.

Aftermarket hitches are the same design as factory, so will have the same strength rating.

For aftermarket bumpers, it depends... Some JK bumpers have extra mounting plates that use the factory hitch mount in addition to the side mounts for a much stronger mount than factory, but most don't have that. Typically, if the bumper includes a location for safety chains, it's reinforced... most don't include those so it's easy to see which ones are only for "accessory" use like racks.

Just wait a few weeks for the aftermarket hitches to become available. If they are anything like the JK hitches, they will be a simple DIY install. For just a bike rack, I would definitely go for aftermarket hitch and save a few $.

What if they put a blanket or jacket or towel or something over the cable? Would that have helped?

Maybe, it might have dampened it enough but it was pretty violent snap back so something was getting damaged

Bob, I have a JLU Rubicon on order, will just have standard plastic bumpers. Will the JK hitch fit, and what about the wiring kit that Quadratec ( or any retailer) sells? Thanks for any help you can provide
