It used to be that HALF doors were standard and FULL doors were optional. This gave a lower price start. Now you have to get DUAL doors making it extremely expensive and where to store 4 extra doors. I figured when JEEP came out with special editions named Beach & High Tide that was perfect for soft top half Door with hard top and full doors as options.
Lower priced affordable trim.

Possibly modern safety standards compel the inclusion of full-size doors as standard fitments, thus creating a wedge that allows half doors w/soft uppers to be sold as de facto (if damn expensive) accessories.

Yes, I too remember the lower price of my YJ, purchased with half doors as standard equipment.

Welp you were wrong! As you may not be aware, everything is about making money and the returns to shareholders, investors… blah blah blah. Money is the name of the game. And people are willing to pay it for half doors.

I really wish they did. When I bought my Jeep for $38k, it was the cheapest new Rubicon in the country with only options being paint and tires. Now the 2022 Rubicons moved more upmarket, with standard larger entertainment system, Alpine and I think another option. Doing so moved the Jeep base MSRP more up and I wouldn’t have considered it (my aftermarket options cost less or close to the same and is far superior).

I still feel a base Rubicon without power windows and half doors, base radio and entertainment should be offered. With half doors being an either or option, no extra cost. $35,995 for a stripper Rubicon seems like a sweet price as a starting pointing for a Rubicon. Even if little are sold and more of a marking thing. I would have bought that Jeep.

After getting a set of half doors, I get the sense that
1. They're more costly to make
2. They're less safe.

I GUARANTEE they're more Noisy, and it's a bit of a PITA to have to pull out the uppers and put em on, compared to rolling up the windows.

The only advantage half doors has is they are more open and they look cooler.

The vast majority of people will prefer full doors, that can be removed over half doors. Honestly, I love my half doors, but if I have to pick one set full doors win every time.

If it was made as a standalone option, I can see being an built to order delivery. The people who really want it, would order and be okay with the limitations. Just the same with a stripped Jeep in general.

A fair compromise. Allow the buyer to choose full doors or half doors/soft uppers at the time of ordering, where either choice neither adds nor subtracts from the cost of the vehicle. This M.O. deviates only slightly from the actual configuration process in place when I purchased my 1995 Wrangler.

I think Ford made a Bronco like that. Bare bones, with the Sasquatch package. If I recall it didn't sell well.
And now they offer the 4 cylinder, base Sasquatch with a manual. I do think they charge as much as for an automatic Sasquatch. Don’t know if you can get the manual on a 4 door base. I think I remember something about that.

The BaseSquatch was actually quite popular on the forums (best sample of the enthusiast community) especially after they made it available with the manual transmission.

I ordered a basesquatch.

I have a willys xr on order, and if they decide to offer half doors instead of full doors for the same price in 2023, ill lose my deposit and reorder a 23 with half doors.

The sheer volume of full doors vs half doors (if it was a stand alone option) will make the full doors cheaper.
I don't work for Jeep, so I don't know for sure, but I would suspect the reason they don't offer them as a stand alone option and only as a dual door is because of crash testing. Every engine, transmission, roof, etc option jeep offers they have to crash test a certain number of jeeps to prove safety standards. If a jeep can be bought with half doors only then they would have to crash test a number of full jeeps (2 and 4doors) to satisfy regulatory agencies (NHTSA). The volume of half door only jeeps probably wouldn't justify the cost; if they would pass current and future standards the JL will fall under. Additionally to the physical cost of the product, the halfdoors take a lot more finessing to get adjusted so there is an an assembly line slow up or special path and additional labor involved as well.

Isn't what you describe already offered with the Willys? Isn't it basically a Rubicon without all the bells and whistles?
