Took this out of my Wrangler JL. Was inline with OBD2. Is it a GPS tracker, and is it ok to leave disconnected? So far no check engine light. Thanks.

I bought my Jl 4/23 and noticed a wire hanging down when I got it home and it was this exact same unit. I took it out right then and I have never had any check engine lights or weird things happen. That thing is a gps tracker get rid of it

If you don't pay cash for your Jeep, your lender may have something buried in the fine print of the loan agreement that states you authorize them to install a tracker & maybe even an engine kill device. If you remove the device while the agreement is still in force, it may land you in some hot water. If the Jeep is paid off, then I would expect that they would have no further recourse to require you to do anything, but I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not a good source of legal advice.

I did read about a past occurrence of a "you pay here" type car dealer switching from one supplier of tracker/killers to another, & when the account at the first company ran out, all those trackers killed the engines in those cars. Some were driving in traffic at the time.

I think that those things are un-American.

I picked up my new 2024 JLUR today and was told I had to set up the Jeep Cares app stuff before I left or the dealership gets penalized for it somehow. Yeah I can start the car from my phone etc etc and see where my car is...so someone else can too. Didn't occur to me but may ask the bank about any requirement. The sales girl didn't say anything about one having to be installed.

Can you folks that have removed them still do all the stuff on the app?

**Looked up on the Jeep site.
https://www.jeep.com/uconnect/systems/2024/UBX.html

Looks like it has to be in there to have and use all the fancy electronic options if "properly equipped" and saw "must have a proper telematics device installed, which from what I found is different from a GPS.

The app uses the on-board GPS from inside the radio unit. These things are shitty 3rd party GPS trackers. I don't know why they bother installing them, it takes LITERALLY 10 seconds to peek under and unplug them. Total false sense of security with these, and they usually charge $1400+ for them.
