Friend of mine bought a new 2022 Ram with an ED. The manual notes that if you drive in severe conditions, or in certain locations — PA, OH, NY, WV, MD, KS, OK, IA, MO, NE — you should have your filter changed and water drained every 10k miles due to fuel quality, instead of every 20k.

That’s the first time I’ve seen that. Any idea if that holds for us? Or… why those states?

I pulled up a 2022 RAM 1500 manual online and do not see that.

In any event.....different (higher) biodiesel percentages generally will contribute to lower OCI’s.

EDIT....
I do see it.

Yeah, fuel standards are set by each state if I remember right. Climate will drive different blends at different times of the year. Smog-prone places will run different blends too.

Fuel is definitely not the same in every state or store, I was on the side of the road having to treat my tank and pray because I bought at the wrong store in NY.

Oddly enough....the disclaimer in the RAM 1500 EcoDiesel manual is NOT present in the 2022 Jeep Wrangler EcoDiesel manual.

Very puzzling...... ?

A few giant pipelines move finished product from the Gulf Coast throughout the country. Yes, different states have different Specs, BUT there are also federal standards. GENERALLY, fuel is fuel, and it changes by seller, only based on blended detergents and the like. Ethanol is blended in as well, we all know that.

Diesel is a different deal, as indicated above with the bio blending.

NOT looking to start an argument or flamewar. Simply stating what I know, from working for a Major Refiner.

EDIT: And yes there are refineries throughout the country that aren't on the gulf coast.

Right? That’s mostly what I was a bit confused on. I guess it’s tuned differently, but for it to change maintenance recommendations on the Ram, but not the JL? That just surprised me.

Even with different tuning, the hard parts are identical, if I were guessing. That’s where the true confusion arises....IMO.

Perhaps it’s a typo / omission in the JL manual.

I‘ve never seen any verbiage in my previous RAM HD Cummins equipped trucks stating any variances for servicing of the fuel filters....only a different regimen of OCI’s depending on the biodiesel content.

Thanks. Yeah, I’d expect a difference with biodiesel blends, but the location bit surprised me — especially as it explicitly called our fuel quality. Yeah, confusing indeed.

Neh. I live in MD, had diesels for a long time, no need to make any maintenance 'changes' for winter fuel. You should be draining fuel/water and changing the fuel filters every other oil change.

Not disagreeing that it is in the manual, I don't know, but being a diesel owner in MD, if that is true Jeep messed something up in the motor design :)

None of us (nor the manuals) ever mentioned the changes were in regards to the use of winter fuel....

The Jeep app now seems to suggest a fuel filter change at 10k, while my manual does say 20k, which is more inline with my friend’s Ram.

Not concerned, just seems like a change in recommendation.

My techs here at the CDJR where I work recommend fuel filter at 10k here in MY. We just got in a 2016 Ram Ecodiesel that had two injectors that stuck open at 130k. Also, tech at first could not get them out. The repair quote was over $6k. Filters are cheap....
