I completed my first BOH trail last week at Jericho Mountain, NH with my girlfriend and two dogs. I live in North Jersey where there aren‘t many places for legal off road. For the most part, it’s been sand roads and mud in the Pine Barrens/Wharton State Forest, off season beach pass in LBI and power and gas lines in my area. We flat towed my 2021 JLUR with our RV to Gunstock Mountain, NH for the Bronco Off Rodeo. I was very surprised by the Off Rodeo. I expected a couple lectures- Tread lightly, recovery, etc and then an easy boring trail ride down a dirt fire road. They actually had us climbing rocks, off camber, mud, and 30 degree climbs and descents. This was after a couple days of heavy rain. We got lucky and only had 3 Broncos in our group. The first group had 16 Broncos. I wish Jeep would do something like this, I enjoyed it that much. If anyone gets the chance to do one, I would recommend it at one of the four sites across the country- NH, Moab, Vegas and Texas.
We then went a couple hours north to a campground near Gunstock Mtn. When we got there, again after days of heavy rain, the ranger asked a couple times if I had a winch. He also pointed out that a lot of people consider their green trails as black. Since this was my first BOH, I didn’t have anything to compare the difficulty rating to. I did the green trails and stayed away from the others since I was up there by myself. There was a few other Jeeps out on the trails so I wasn’t too worried about being solo. The trails were pretty tough with a lot of rocks, mud and trees. I misjudged a tree as I was climbing a rock and skimmed it with my front passenger fender flare while making a sharp left turn. The “break away” from the fender itself partially worked but It actually peeled the top skin from the bottom skin of the flare and broke two interior brackets. After a quick trail fix, we finished the trail and headed back to the CG for the night. Finished our week at Wells Beach, Maine to make the GF happy with some sun and sand instead of mud! When I got home, found out I can’t replace just the brackets without buying a new flare. Tried plastic weld but that didn’t work out and will have to replace the flare. Been trying for a week to find a junkyard one but no luck finding a Rubicon flare. Ill give it a little more time and if I can’t find one, I’ll have to spend $500 for a new one.
I purchased a new 2005 Wrangler and decided to keep it when buying a new one, only 90,000 miles. In 2020, I decided it was time for a new vehicle. Got a Bronco reservation but got tired of waiting and waiting and worried after hearing the stories about all the issues they were having. Ordered my JLUR in December and picked it up in March of 2021. I’ll share a build thread soon. My GF decided that she liked the Bronco and took my reservation. That explains how we went to the Bronco Off Rodeo. I like the Bronco but would not trade it for my Jeep.
