After almost 30k miles on 3.45 gear and 35s I finally did it. While I felt it’s doable on 35s and the 8AT. It’s not amazing by any means imo, but it’s livable. 8th gear for me was a distant cousin and the jeep spent a lot of time in 7th gear anything I was doing 65mph+. It was turning around 2k-2.2k rpm at 70mph in 7th. It still had a lot of power compared to the stock tires but you can tell the tires are there.

Then comes today, local shop that did my gears did a test drive and then gave me the all clear with new diff fluid. And holy s**t. The jeep pulls hard now in 1st gear and feels pretty effortless getting up to speed. She’s turning around 2.1k rpm for 70mph in 8th gear now; so it moved the gear range back to normal so to speak. I did a pull and for a jeep, it feels fast again and the trans isn’t hunting between 7th or 8th.

I can’t believe it took me this long to finally do it but I’m glad I finally bit the bullet. Feels like a totally new jeep to me now. I also asked the shop to do new BJs and swap in a locker instead of my stock LSD for a peace of mind. So now the jeep to me is mostly done just gonna swap things in as things wear/break.

What ratio did you go with?
Thought I included it sorry. 4.56s, no solid plans for 37s in the future so the jeeps gonna stay on 35s since it’s main duty is a daily.

Very happy with 4.56s and the 2.0.

That's a good combo.

Congratulations on your gear change!
Pretty awesome isn't it?
While different (but similar) I have the 3.6/8-spd, and went 4.56. Did it much earlier at around 2K miles. Running 285/75-17 (34").
What a game changer!
Those that claim 3.45 gears and larger tires are fine with the 8-spd, are woefully missing out.
Enjoy that awakened performance! ?

Congrats!

I am with you, 8th gear has been mostly missing for 4 years with 4.10's and 38's. Even 7th was not in use a lot and did a bunch of switching between 6th <--> 7th all the time.

Not exactly the same, but I recently switched to UD60's with 5.38's on 40's, so much better, I get 8th gear now all the time as I should, definitely much better on the freeway, and around town was a plus as well.

Assuming you did a proper ring and pinion break-in before the heavy accelerating and high speeds?

Of course, 500 miles, first 100 I was babying it, drive half an hour let it cool fully and speeds no greater than 45mph. After that if I took the highway I would only go to about 55mph and let it cool.

And then after the first 200 miles I just maintained easy throttle and no boost. Got the green light from the shop after they swapped in the new oil.

Congratulations on your gear change!

It’s doable for some but not long term imo! The 8AT does a good job hiding it from you though. Very happy, according to the dash I was averaging 18mpg mixed but 16mpg hand calc.
