At least for those of us who do not have charge-at-home infrastructure and even then I don’t want to own one anymore. After a combined 8 years of full EV ownership this experiment is over for me.

As I’m sitting at the “fast” charger charging our BMW iX (full EV) family vehicle, mostly driven by my wife as her commuter car, I have finally come to the (subjective) conclusion that EVs in their current state are crap.

After living with this one, previously living with a Rivian, and before that a Tesla, I have reached my limit of accepting one convenience for giving up on another.

I’ve lived with charge at home, no-tickee-no-washee-public charging infrastructure as well the ability to plug in at work.

I’m done with EVs. Their real world range sucks, especially in winter, they charge too slow and the public infrastructure is a cynical joke at best.

Rant over.

Yea right now they really are only good for commuters that are <50mi a day and a garage you can charge overnight in.

I’m not a fan of EV either. I has a Tesla model 3 dual motor long range and that long range was supposed to be 331miles. I’d get about 198miles out of a full charge on a road trip. And when I had mine there wasn’t a lot of fast chargers in my area we road tripped across Washington state and it took 3x as long to go one direction because of having to stop and charge along the with the wind the grades using the radio and air conditioning. I never thought about that when I bought the car. I had it for 47 days. Then sold it.

Yeah but those are Elon-miles. They are a frequent joke in the EV community.

I am genuinely curious: did you not know these things before you owned an EV?

Of course I did know those things. And since I’ve owned several EVs in subsequent fashion, I was even more so aware of what I was “getting back into”. If you are a diehard EV supporter like I was, these downsides are a “slow burn”. On a day-to-day basis you forget about them, but after years of dealing with them, and then looking at the math of how much of your life time you have invested in them. Keep in mind it’s only recently that I lost my charge-at-home privileges - which is a major contributor to my final verdict.

I don’t “regret” having owned any of these. There’s plenty to enjoy about them. But after years of being part of this experiment, I have now decided it wasn’t worth it (even if there were days or years where it was, the total tally doesn’t support a positive ownership statement from me).

I respect that. I am sure you are aware that there are a LOT of people who will deny these basic facts and crap on people for not buying into the EV craze. My mentality is do whatever suits you best, but don't tell me what suits me best.

The best argument I have heard for buying an EV is in case of gas shortages. So in theory, you would have at least one EV and one ICE vehicle in case there is a gas shortage or a power shortage.

Software will kill all EVs and ICE vehicles on the road before the fuel for propulsion will. Too many sensors, systems and gremlins in these modern cars.

Yes I agree, but temporary gas shortages are real. It was only a few years ago that a pipeline on the east coast was hacked and prices skyrocketed. But the same can be said for temporary power outages, which would make the EV useless.

I predicted four years ago that people would starting turning against the EV craze when I heard the federal mandates being proposed. I think EV's are a great idea, but they are not ready to replace the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine...these days I had better be specific) for the masses. Hybrids are fine, and EV's are good for some people. Attempts to push EV's into roles they just aren't ready for have met with unsurprising results. I think they will evolve fantastically, but they need to evolve at an unforced pace.

How many disappointments(ev vehicles) did it take for you to come to this conclusion? I'm glad you saw the.light. maybe this new Donut technology will turn things around.

Meanwhile, the Chinese are selling astonishing numbers of EVs and PHEVs. Was just in Europe and Central America, BYD and MG dealers popping up everywhere.

I don’t think their reality compares to ours. In a different market, the arguments for and against balance differently than they do here.
