In another thread, @dbp512 clued me into this...

It's a very interesting topic, and something I never knew was possible. Not necessarily something which I would ever do, but definitely a concept which I am now interested in.

Please use this thread as a discussion and possible implement thread for the topic of converting your 3.0 EcoDiesel into a E95 capable engine.

Enjoy!

Military trucks like the m35 can apparently run on diesel, kerosene, and seemingly plenty of other flammable fluids. Is their engine designed differently to allow for such variety of fuel, or does it have to do with other parts, such as the oil system or exhaust (and presumably lack of much pollution limiting equipment)?

From what I've understood, any diesel can run on waste. Vegetable diesel used motor oil and a number of different combustibles. The biggest holdback is the emission system without the emission system. All other fuels should be possible. Is the way I understand it? From there, it would be tuning to get ideal performance-based on the fuel you choose.

My understanding is the creation of the diesel engine was to provide a motor that would run on almost anything combustible. Over the years that flexibility has been cut down to just diesel fuel by all the emissions requirements etc.

So it would make sense that a conversion to any other fuel would be relatively simple. Just have to see what the fed says about modifications.

I wonder what allows the military vehicles to run on pretty much anything, and not need a tune every single time? 🤔

Agreed. There's quite a bit of interesting information out there about engine manufacturers trying to devise a compression ignition gasser.

Perfect apocalypse vehicle, it will run on just about any fuel you can find in the field, diesel, light diesel, kerosene, stove oil, lamp oil, motor oil, fuel oil, jet fuel, transmission fluid, cooking oil, from the lowest grade to 145 octane Avgas although the lower the better for ignition (with some diesel/other oil mixed in for ignition and to lubricate the fuel pump) alcohol, don’t recall, but likely with a mix.

Deuce 1/2- this one bobbed to a 2 axle- perfect :like:

I wish anyone luck, but none of those mods seem "minimal" to me, new cylinder boring?

I dont believe the fuel systems of the modern diesels can run on waste oil. Best application for that is the 5.9 cummins common rail. I wouldnt mess with running this type of fuel in these engines and certainly not with the cp4 given how sensitive it can be.

Yeah I was looking up videos on that earlier today. The guy said you could even run it on Chanel number 5, but it might start a second time though.

I could be wrong. Leaving it a fully equipped 3 axle would be a definite advantage in the apocalypse 😏

Bingo! The fuel system of the military trucks are not the same as modern common rail systems we have today. The old HEUI and mechanical injection system of the old diesels had a lot lower fuel pressure and greater tolerances in their fuel injectors. They would allow contamination that would wreck havoc in the injectors with today's fuel pressures.

Agreed. I was watching a video the other day talking about those military multi-fuel engines, and how they run diesel efficiently, and everything else poorly. You can run it on other stuff in a pinch, but it's not ideal for the engine in the long run. And even then most of the stuff that you're putting into that engine, you're still going to have to mix in some level of diesel otherwise the octane rating is going to be too low and you need it right around 135 something like that.

Regarding your question about military and emissions, they’re exempt.
