Drop Step Question

Hello All,

November, I got a 2023 Willy Unlimited with the Xtreme Recon package in it. Really wasn't looking for a Jeep with the XR package but I had to get a new Jeep as soon as I could due to my other one getting destroyed in an accident (Jeep vs Tractor Trailer)

I started finding it hard to get in and out of and I don't have any steps on it, so I am looking for recommendations on a set, basically looking for a step with a drop step. I don't want any power ones as I can see them having issues with lots of snow and salt.

It seems to me that really there are only two options out there with what I am looking for, The LOD Armor Lite steps with the extra drop step or the Go Rhino with the extra drop step.

Any input would be great, just looking for the safest way for me to get in and out of my Jeep without hurting my knee anymore then it is.

Are you going to take it out in a situation where you need body protection from the step? If not, then the factory plastic steps available as cheap take offs, are probably a pretty decent idea. They are capable of handling the snow and slush from Northern winters without deteriorating super quickly from corrosion that comes with salted roads.

I don't need body protection, but the OEM plastic ones would still be too high to lift myself into. Thats why I was asking about a drop step that has an added step for the assistant to get in.

I’d recommend the LOD as they are corrosion resistant thanks to being aluminum.

Yes, if you are looking for a lower than rail height step, and corrosion resistant materials for the great white north, this is a solid option.

The other option, the one I use, is Rock Slide Engineering motorized step slider. It’s both a rock rail and a very nice step when you open the door. Not cheep but, to me, worth the price.

I can confirm that Rock Slide Step Sliders are up to the road salt of NE Ohio and the rocks of Utah and Colorado. We had them on our '15 and will be putting them on the '21. LoD steps were my 2nd choice (I need a little more help with my lousy knees, though).

I looked into them but being almost 4 grand I almost had a heart attack.

Interesting that you say that. I know that they have improved their design over the years. I had read of many problems with the mechanism in ice, and cold. Do you know what generation your steps are?

Mine is bone on bone arthritis in both knees- you'll be glad if the extra step length eventually. I love the LoD steps but I need more of a drop than they'll give me, and we wheel so the rocksliders are necessary.

Good to hear that. I've been eyeing them since they were first developed. With the wife being vertically challenged, and my decision to run 38s, I kinda need those.

Worth it. The only issue we've had is that they didn't like the irregular voltage issues we were having with a bad battery but have been fine since it was replaced.

My vote is for the Rockslide engineering automatic steps. I received my 2024 Wrangler Rubicon 4dr with factory slides with assisted step in April of 2024. When I got home with the new Jeep, my wife asked me "What were you thinking???. How will people get into our Jeep? We have people from our church who are disabled and we are older and will have a difficult time getting in sooner or later ourselves." I immediately ordered a Rockslide Engineering setup for our four door wrangler. When it arrived, it was very well packaged and in excellent condition.The directions for installation were excellent along with a video online. I was able to install them by myself without any other helpers. I absolutely love them! When I open a door, the step comes out and down about one foot.When I close the door, the step disappears back into the heavy duty slider. The steps are just the right height to make it so easy to get into my Jeep and get out safely without tripping. My friend with an artificial leg can enter easily and exit easily as well as another older friend that has difficulty walking. Every time I get into my Jeep, I end up with a great big smile on my face. They have improved the rockslide steps to be much more dependable in snowy,icey,and salty conditions. You will still need to maintain them well. They are spendy but well worth the price in quality and function.
