Door Issue

Hi everyone,

Our friend's father passed away recently and he had a very nice 2017 2-door JK Sahara with 75,000 miles. The car has not been driven much in the last 6 months and was garaged. They didn't want it so I ended up buying it. It is my 2nd Jeep. I have a 2018 JLUR that is my daily driver.

The JK Sahara has one issue that I can't figure out yet so I thought I would ask. The passenger door hinge prevents it from closing as easily as it should. It makes no strange noises when it closes but it has to be slammed to close and latch. When closed the seams along the entire perimeter are perfect and there is no metal-to-metal contact or wear evident on either the frame or door.

CARFAX report shows no accidents and that was confirmed by our friends. Other than this, it is solid.

Does anyone have any ideas I could try?

Sounds like an alignment issue with the hinge. Try closing the door and loosening the hinge bolts, then retighten. May take a few tries.

Does it feel like there's resistance at the hinge when closing? Have you tried taking the door off? Maybe some corrosion in the liner. If that's the case might want to try these.

It’s also possible that the door was sprung by the previous owner.

JK doors can have issues with weather stripping failing and water leaking in. Aftermarket weather stripping does not compress easily, making the door harder to close. Before you mess with the hinges, try to determine if the weather stripping was changed.

Yes, that is how it feels. There is some visible corrosion so I guess I will take the door off and get the rust out

I looked at that but the resistance is way before the door contacts the weather stripping

Are the hinges corroded or replaced? Does the door lift off easily?

I just saw this reply. There is a large aftermarket for JK hinges, so depending on how rusted the hinges are, you might want to look at replacing them. Kentrol makes black powder coated stainless steel replacements.

I expect that before long there will be aftermarket black powder coated hinges available for JLs.

The hinges themselves look OK and so do the bolts holding the hinges to the bodywork. The rust that is evident looks to be on the bushing and pin.
