Does this engine sound normal?

I and several others run 40 grade motor oil as it helps with residual boundary layer and lubrication. I’m on AZ and run Castrol Edge Euro 5w-40. If I lived in a colder environment I’d run 0w-40 such as Castrol or Mobil 1 FS Euro.

Make sure to drive spirited above 3000 rpm as that will push the variable displacement oil pump onto high pressure and help lubrication. Just search my posts for more info.

I agree, try the easiest, and less expensive fix first. I am currently running the Mobil 1 0w-40 Euro spec. Wonderful oil, and my engine is quiet as can be, at 41,000 miles.
When, and if you change the oil, see what is inside the oil filter.

I’m in Vancouver BC Canada so a little colder similar climate to Seattle for reference with less rain. For my climate you would do 0w 40? I couldn’t find the posts you were referring to thanks for the help.

I can’t tell you what to do but i will try to explain what I do. If low temps are averaging below 20F I switch to 0w. Technically, 5w is good way below that. I typically change my oil at 2-2.5k mi intervals so I don’t spend on boutique oil and just get a good Euro grade oil because those have to meet very high standards from Mercedes, Porsche, BMW so I know it’s good enough. At my local Walmart Mobil and Castrol are the brands usually stocked in 5 qt bottles but any Euro spec oil is fine whether Penzoil, Valvoline etc.

Mobil 1 FS Euro 0w-40 is more a heavy 30 grade so you could start there and move to heavier brands within the 40 grade. For me I and my winter lows I am fine with Castrol Edge Euro 0w-40 for winter which is a little heavier viscosity and outside of winter I am runnin Castrol 5w-40 which is heavier still. That’s what’s in my Jeep now and it starts well at my current low ambient temps.

I am less concerned with general engine wear that all engines have over several hundreds of thousands of miles. My goal is to hopefully protect against premature engine failure.

Top tier fuel and fuel treatments are also a part of this equation as those fuels contain detergents/additives that also help reduce engine wear.

To sum up for me when I see low temps in single digits F I switch to 0w-40 and rest of year I use 5w-40.

We rarely get below 20F here in the winter and if we do it only lasts a week if that. Our winters are usually in the 35F - 45F range usually staying around 45F - 55F range in the winter (trying to the conversions to fahrenheit for you lol).
All that to say from the above i dont get as cold as you so maybe 5w-40?
