I tried the tablet thing for a season but decided it wasn’t the best solution for me. Just another gadget to maintain.

Now I run Gaia on my phone and use CarPlay to display it on the dash screen. Phone stays charged, display is easy to see but not in my way.

Sirius XM must be doing some kind of weather alert system now, because I have been annoyed several times by their intrusive advertising popping up on my screen when I crank the Jeep. I don’t know anything about their product, whether it’s satellite fed or ground based internet, as I am not a customer.
I also have the wireless apple car play in my jeep and also use the gaia maps on the screen, my only thing is the lack of wireless connection in the mountains and hills where I live really suck.

The Bad Elf works great on your phone and tablet With no cell signal.

So I found this (below) online - was wondering if something similar could be done. Sounds like there may be more than a couple of options which is encouraging - thanks again for the input!

I run gaia maps on my iphone and ipad, I do not know anything about android. The good thing about it is once you save anything it will also save on your other device. If you plan on doing remote wheeling you really will need a remote GPS unit. I have a garmin hand held unit and man it really sucks for offroad because the display is half the size of my iphone.

Thanks for the info. Great comments (and article) - even more things to think about as it pertains to gps to help me get to the trial and then down the trial. I was originally planning on playing with one of the these retired tiablets and a GPS receiver to see what it gets me, but I hadn’t thought about the remote gps unit for when I get really remote.
