Apparently my ‘21 JLU Willys (2.0L with Auto) needs the timing chain tensioner replaced. I have the Mopar Max Care extended warranty but the dealer is telling me I might be liable for at least $1400 in diagnostic repairs if mopar doesn’t approve the claim. (They are saying they need to disassemble to take photos for the claim)

gas anyone come across this issue/policy? I’ve never encountered this in my life and I’ve probably owned 20 cars.

Bull, find another dealer. This tells me the dealer does not know thats the problem.

Rumor has it some dealers will charge you the diagnostic if they think it might not be that.

I asked my dealer, they have never done that, you bring it in, they fix it.

Maxcare claims require per-authorizion over $5000 or $1000 depending on the age of vehicle and policy type. This means they need to be torn down to point of failure and digital imaging submitted through dealer connect.

You are obligated to authorize tear down labor in the event that the repair ends up not being covered. You will almost certainly be covered in this situation, it's just a precaution. It's possible they crack your timing cover off and find everything completely covered in sludge due to neglecting regular oil changes.

Not to say that's your case, I'm just giving an example where a claim could possibly be rejected. If they pull it off and find you never did oil changes, the tech still needs to get paid for his time. That's what your tear down authorization covers. It's to protect the technician for his labor spent on your vehicle JUST IN CASE something ends up not being covered.

Read above. A dealer should always get diagnostic/tear down authorization from the customer before performing repairs in the unlikely event that a repair ends up being rejected by digital imaging. Even under basic warranty a diagnostic fee should be agreed upon at write up in the unlikely event that the tech finds not warrantable. An example would be rodent damage causing your check engine light.
