What's funny is in my two test drives of the JL, not once did I think rough and tumble. It's slightly bumpy and slightly tumbly...slightly. It basically drive like every other SUV on the market now. Honestly can't see how they'd make front and rear axles any smoother than they have.

CR-V is solid, but every soccer mom in the country has one.

And, the CR-V has a removable top and doors like the Wrangler! (tool sold separately)

Agreed on all counts, except I think the Civic Si doesn't seem like such a great deal next the GTI (what I currently drive), at least not at actual "street" prices. GTIs routinely sell for $6k+ below MSRP, so the street price for a GTI Sport last year was about the same as a Civic Si. And the GTI has a more upscale interior, way more power/torque, and a more sophisticated electromechanical diff. Not to mention that the Si isn't even available as a hatch. With a switch from rubber->aftermarket metal shift bushings, I actually think the 6MT in the GTI is just as good as the Si (neither holds a candle to the S2k's 'rifle bolt' 6MT though).

Total cost of ownership definitely favors the Civic though, as GTIs are brutal on the depreciation front (probably thanks to those $6k+ discounts).
I was considering a GTi a year or two ago, but things like reliability and that depreciation meant I looked elsewhere before even test driving. I didn't know they sold them that far below MSRP, though.

Definitely still the hot hatch benchmark. Stylish, with two great transmissions, a gem of an engine, and a very well thought out interior.

Maybe one day for me... My first car was a VW and it semi-soured the brand for me.
