I'll make this quick and easy.... like my ex (actually why I left her ?)...

I have been to SEVEN off road shops and 5 general tire shops (Firestone, NTB, Parrish, etc). I have the typical 17x7.5 stock wheels and the 255/75/17 off my other JL. All 12 shops say I can use 17x9 wheels on the 255/75/17 tires since they are pretty brand new and don't feel like forking over another $2k for 35s just yet. Four of the off road shops though said they are iffy about coming off the bead but only if I air down or take sharp curves "like a sports car".... ?

anyone ever mount 17x9 or anything other than 17x7.5 with a 255/75? Had any bead loss if you have? I leave my JTR for crawling, my JL (im mounting this setup on) for fire trails and backcountry... even overlanding.

one of the more reputable sites I've used on my other Jeeps and sports car, I looked for info and im still wondering how viable the info from all 12 shops is since they all seem to contradict each other. (all specs, backspacing, offset, tire size, etc are verified and plugged in)

thanks ahead of time. =O||||||||O=

If you haven't purchased your rims you may consider the Method 700 series with Bead Grip. Light compared to beadlocks. Airing down would not be a concern.

I'm running 285/75R17 Toyo ATIIIs on my OEM 17/7.5" MOAB wheels with no problems at either highway inflation or lowered inflation on the trails.

Based on my experience I'd say you would be fine. Just don't deflate to less than 20 psi.

AFAIK the narrower wheels actually work better for airing down, it's that 255 width on a 9" that may cause the bead of the tire to go inward, causing air/bead loss but ???

Thanks everyone.

@blnewt so I went to a shop who specializes in more than just Jeep and has been in business for 45yrs and talked to the owner. He saw the hesitation about it and threw me the keys to his JLU, told me to go for a drive and take it to a "test area" he built behind the shop. Didn't say a word on fitment, just said "it's aired down to 24psi, have fun and lemme know when you come back in an hour." He was running the Mickey P3 255 on Vision 17x9. It was smooth and hugged every slope andterrain. He said that unless you're rock crawling and "bumping", these have no issues with holding bead since there's a inner bead on the wheel even though they aren't beadlocks and wider than factory wheels. So I guess I have my answer at least for a few months. Thank you, really.

Like the others, I don't think rolling off the bead will be an issue. I don't like it for another reason...

With the wider wheel, you're pushing more of the sidewall out over the tread, leaving the sidewall more susceptible to trail & rock damage. At least that's my experience. The few times I've trashed a sidewall, it's been on a wide wheel/narrow tire arrangement. Once I started running narrower wheels and pulling the sidewalls in a little bit, that stopped happening.

Also: tire pressures start being more critical to tire wear when you start pushing wheel vs tire widths away from the ideal.

Yeah, at 24 psi there shouldn't be a problem, when you get around 15 psi I think you may have a different situation. That was good that you were able to see how it will be firsthand, and FWIW I think I'd only air down to the low 20s w/ that setup.
