For consumer products, it is all about cost. Labor is cheaper and regulations are looser.I need to ask the obvious.
With chips integrated in everything from our military hardware to consumer products, why are they manufactured offshore?
I work as an EE hardware engineer for company who was a military contractor. The proprietary 'chips' was designed and made in short runs. For existing equipment they stock replacement parts for the life cycle of the product. At least at what I worked on, the products would not be affected by chip shortage. One of my co-workers use work a company who did ruggedized equipment and they started off with consumer products (tablets), the military would order a large number of them so it would last 2 years plus expected replacements. Obviously in design & development they would be subject to current shortages.
