I recently put some Pintlers and new KM3’s on. The tire shop obviously didn’t understand the point of Pintlers, and put long valve stems in the wheels. When I saw what they did, I explained that the entire point of the shrouded valve stem was to protect it from being sheared off, and long stems absolutely defeated the point. They refused to swap in proper length stems claiming that the tool they use to seat stems “didn’t fit in the hole” and simply pulling them through “wasn’t possible” (ooooooookay….yeah).
So time to do it myself.
Every other valve stem change I’ve done in the past, I’ve just driven up on to the aired down tire as close to the rim as I could to break bead since I don’t have access to a machine. After complaining about it to friends, I get a video recommendation from a social media site (how convenient) showing a kit claiming a 5 minute stem swap without breaking the bead. Shockingly, it works as advertised. It took longer to air down than it did to swap stems. The kit uses a hook that slips in along side the old stem to pull it out, a ram that threads on to the new stem, and a forcing cone to compress the new stem through the hole. Very easy and simple. Definitely going into my tool kit. $38 on Amazon.
