There have been a lot of fires and beetle kill in the areas I go. I always carry a small chainsaw in my truck and have had numerous occasions where I had to cut my way in or out of someplace. I need a place to carry a saw on my JL outside the cab so I don't get gas fumed and without having to buy a big rack (not that I have anything against big racks). Is there a spare tire mounted option that anyone knows about that won't tweak the tail gate over time or something else that would work?

This isn't a direct answer to your Question, You might consider the battery powered saw. I have used the Milwaukee 18v saw with their 12.0 amp/hr battery. It is a great medium duty saw comparable to my Echo CS-400. You still need to capture the bar oil drips that every saw has, but no fuel/oil fumes.

Not a bad idea but I already have the saws. I'm thinking a hitch mounted rack that sits above the spare tire and clamps to the spare from the sides for lateral support to keep it from swaying while not actually using the spare to carry any weight. I've looked around but can't seem to find such a creature so I'll probably build one and see how it works out.

How much do these small saws weigh? Depending on how light they are and the weight of your spare, you could possibly be fine with roping it off to your spare.
