Carpet Storage

I intend to pull the carpets as soon as I get the Jeep home and wonder what most people do with their carpet. Do most people put it in and out every time they plan on getting muddy/wet or do other people have permanent storage recommendations? Between still having small children and the areas I know I'll be in and out of I think the smart thing would be just storing them. Do I need to store them in plastic or just on a shelf in a humid garage is acceptable?
