It has to be open. It was open last summer. We drove over there and it was SOO packed the line went all the way to major blvd and they had to close the gates and say no more people allowed inside. Many of which were not even 4x4s and not even trucks/suvs lol.

I think it was closed for a while due to the Bobcat Fire. The latest closure area map ( https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd893845.pdf ) cuts right along there, but it's on the boundary so I'm not sure if it's open or not. I'd definitely recommend calling before you go.

Edit: Yeah, this page ( https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/angeles/recarea/?recid=41960 ) on the USFS site says closed due to Bobcat. But still, I'd call. Sometimes these pages don't get updated as fast as they should.

Last time I went up the 39 (Feb) they were using the area around Azusa Canyon OHV as a staging area for the repair crews doing work post Bobcat Fire. Likely not worth it, I can only imagine the amount of ash and fire debris draining towards the area this year. The fire literally burned towards the west flank of the 39 at the lower elevations.
