One time my jeep would not shut off even when i discounted both cables on the big battery. they said because the little axu battery was going bad so it wont turn off the motor. finally it shut off and had to buy both batterys, again 2 yrs later it happened again. so if i discount the neg cable and fuse 42 i juust run everything off the one big battery thats al and no probles ?
Deferring to the guys here for their experience but what I'm reading, just wrap the Aux negative cable up and leave it in the lower box, attach the Aux positive cable to the main battery up top and that's all that's necessary.

@multicam Tanner, what does pulling the #42 fuse do in addition to what I described above? Understood it is a method to defeat the ESS, but if a mod or Tazer is used for that, is pulling the #42 redundant?

To your first paragraph, no- you don’t attach the Aux positive to anything. All you do is disconnect the Aux negative from the main battery and tape it up. You don’t even have to access the aux battery.

Actually, pulling Fuse 42 doesn’t defeat ESS- it simply allows the jeep to not have an Aux battery connected with no error lights. I still have to manually disable ESS every time I start the Jeep since I don’t have a Tazer or anything similar

So, just wrapping this thread up. My Jeep is now configured with the SmartStopStart module that I purchased for $130. It's working great. All it does is remember the last known setting of the ESS so it makes the Jeep perform how I would have expected it to perform. Hit the dash button to turn it off, it stays that way.

I removed the bad Aux battery and wrapped the negative. Routed the positive cable up to the main battery, which is now a new heavy duty AGM battery, and attached it there.

Even though I don't intend to ever run with the ESS on again, I at least have the ability to turn it on. No errors on the dash. Life's rosy.

WiseguyDS, wondering how things have held up, anything you’d have done differently?
I’m in the same situation. ESS hasn’t worked for a year or so. Recently with cold weather my remote start hasn’t worked. Large battery is still able to start it, but it’s lugging a bit. I’d like to install the SmartStopStart module and just replace the main battery.
I have the diesel, not sure if it makes a difference. I’ll check into that.
Thanks.
