Old thread but I love this tire carrier, who makes it? I've got my 37" spare on the tailgate but want to upgrade before it starts causing issues.
That looks to be the genright spare tire carrier https://genright.com/products/jeep-jl-swing-out-rear-tire-carrier-aluminum.html.

I just bought one myself and did not install yet, in the middle of UD60 swap and 40's.
Some Pro's that mattered most to me on this carrier:
Fits up to a 42" tire.
Fits all wheel back spaces
You do not have to remove license plate, third brake light or camera to pull the spare off
Works on all lug patterns since you don't have one on this system, so no lug nuts to deal with either.
Fits tight to the rear tailgate
Good departure angle

Some Cons to me:
It's a two step process to get in the back of the Jeep
A little more wiring to mess with, and a camera extension needed

As for the original post, I personally would do a full size spare, even if you DD, plus off-road. That's just me though.

But with a 40+ tire, that's your only robust option.
3 of my 4 Nitto 38x13.5R70 are in. As soon as the 4 arrives and I'll get them on my bead locks,, then I'm upgrading my 31" spare (I'm currently on 37's) to 33".

I agree, the other options to use for 8 lug wheels was minimal and did not care for them that much for a 40 and on the tailgate. My 38 spare I have now which is somewhat light, was good on the tailgate with the EVO spare tire carrier.
