What's Apple CarPlay?

Please explain to someone with a 5-in screen!!

On a more serious note, if your wife's phone has no trouble connecting, but your phone does, it's pretty obvious where the problem is... Have you tried updating your phone and all the software on it, or maybe upgrading to an Android phone?

Your humor is quite extreme. 😂
Upgrading you say… 🤣
That reminds me that my wife & I have several friends in a particular hiking group who for some reason are proud to own, drive & shout the praises of the vehicle line that the actor Paul Hogan did commercials for years ago.
Through the art of persuasion my wife became interested in getting one of their little station wagons. I took her to test drive one & quickly let her know that she/we were not going to own one of them.
She is now the proud owner of a 25 JLU Willys & laughs at those little station wagons.

A We used to own Androids/Windows phones & now I laugh at them.
Usually when you have a problem with an Apple product, it’s a user interface issue. Or what some may call operator error. Make sure that you have your Bluetooth & WiFi both on & if you connect it through CarPlay correctly I’ve never had any problems

This video helped me out a lot when I first connected my phone to the Jeep. Maybe it will help you. 🤷‍♂️

This is for Bluetooth Uconnect, it is a bit different from the CarPlay feature.

Yeah I get that. I was just making jokes.

I have a Motorola Edge 50 Ultra that you can't currently purchase in the United States. I had to order mine from the UK and get it shipped here. I like Motorola, I've always had good luck with them. But yeah I got the 5-in small screen with no fancy doohickeys on it in my 2021 Wrangler.

But yeah if your wife's phone connects just fine and yours doesn't, it's something with your phone.

When is the last time you reset your phone? Like turned it on and off reset it? Because modern day smartphones build up errors and because we never turn them off anymore, the errors don't have a way to reset. So you got your phone that just has tons and tons and tons of errors built up over the weeks and months that we don't turn our phone off, and resetting your phone wipes those clean. So if you ever see your phone bogged down or responding slowly when it otherwise didn't in the past, resetting your phone will fix a lot of that.

I don't know if it could be a software or a firmware update on your Apple CarPlay app within your iPhone, but I would go in and figure out what software update is on your wife's phone and make sure yours has the exact same update. If your phone somehow got a beta update or maybe has a different update than she is currently using, that could be part of the problem as well. I'm not really sure if you can go back to old updates on iPhones, If not, you should be able to uninstall Apple CarPlay and go to the internet and download the specific update you want, but you'll probably have to enable third party downloads.

Beyond that you could always reset the infotainment system on the Jeep itself, and reconnect both phones.

As an added thought, I don't know if you can see all of the background processes that are currently running on an iPhone, but if you can, there might be something that is running in the background on your phone specifically that could be causing issues with CarPlay.

I turn background activity off on every app I have on my Motorola short necessary system functions. So on my phone if I don't have an app open, it ain't doing nothing in the background.

If your iphones are old enough to have lightning ports, I'd suggest getting a toothpick and gently cleaning the lint out of them. It may help.

Alternatively, try getting a wireless carplay adapter? I use a carlinkit mini se myself. (they also call em Mini SE Pro, Mini 5, etc). They have a usb-c connector on one and and a usb-a connector on the other. We have these in all of our cars and they work pretty reliably, especially with newer iphones.

It sounds a little pointless at first, but the nice thing about those adapters is you can plug it in and leave it there. No need to fiddle with cables or connectors, which ironically makes it a little more reliable I think lol.

Use actual Apple cable not generic one. Make sure you don’t have VPN running on your phone.

Been in your exact same place. Wife's phone worked, mine didn't. Both iPhone 16 and back in April this year (2025) not long after taking delivery of my new JL it started getting wonky then mine wouldn't connect. Tried everything before resetting the phone. The only thing that fixed it was a full iPhone reset and it's been working since. Complete reset like you were going to sell it. Make sure iOS is up to date before you go through all that crap though. Back up your phone, reset, test, restore, test again.

Good luck.

All good points I am sure. The 2024 has wireless car play. My issue was an app I use for work, that basically takes over the phone and makes it like another device on top of your personal stuff.

Ah yes, MDM. I've had a love / hate relationship with that stuff. Used to be the guy that mandated the products and settings for a mid-sized company. Can be pretty challenging...

If it’s a User Interface (UI) error, it is a problem with the software—how it was designed or coded. The UI is the bit of software that controls how the user interacts (interfaces) with it. So like Apple Music using the same phone gesture to minimize the now playing screen as iOS uses to show the Notification Center is a minor UI error. User errors (operator errors) are not the same as UI errors.

I think I saw this mentioned as I scanned the replies, and I will suggest as well. If you have a lightning port, check carefully and remove any 'fuzz' that tends to build up in them. I had trouble with mine on my Harley Davidson touring bike and this was the cause for that error. I have seen some where a restart fixed it, and some where a full reset was needed. They tend to collect 'bit rot' over time and need to get flushed out so to speak. Good luck!
