Taking mine in Friday to have it inspected for the fuel pump and an oil leak on the driver side front. From what I’m reading it could be the timing cover. Any idea on how detailed a fix that is? Thanks

Yep, I found my timing cover leaking in the spring. Doesn’t drip or anything, just sweating some. Parts were on back order and they got them finally about three weeks ago. They also ordered the HPFP recall and associated parts a month ago and got them in just this past week. It goes in on Wednesday this week for two days to do both at once since they are in the area anyway. Each one is a 6 hour job.
Front cover leaks seem to be kind of common unfortunately.

Yes. Had the cover replaced. Kind of a big job. Includes fuel lines and such. Leak came back. Tech thought it was the plate below the block, above the 2 pc oil pan. Suggested I leave it be unless I start seeing a puddle. Said odds of bigger problems if they take it down to that level with how tight tolerances are on these diesels. But, my leak is documented in the system, with pictures, three times now so FCA has proof of it.

Was your front differential and oil pan covered with oil?

I thought it was having a timing cover leak, but as it turns out I'm not.

So the dealership will more than likely replace your entire timing cover and the gasket...

When in reality all that needs to be done is to possibly replace the gasket which cost about eight bucks on RockAuto, and then all you have to do is have someone re-RTV it, which can vary in price.

Personally I wouldn't take it to the dealer, I doubt anyone there is trained well enough to properly RTV it for you.

You don't need a new timing cover if it is leaking. The issue isn't with the machining of the timing cover, the issue is that the people who built it in the factory got lazy and didn't do very good job RTVing it from the factory.

That's why you should take it to an RV shop or somewhere where they're used to RTVing timing covers. Take it to someone inexperienced, and you're just going to run into the same problem later down the road.

Just got word from the dealer. Says my drain plug was stripped and dripping which it wasn’t. Also the oil all over the front differential and oil pan was from whoever changed the oil filter last which was me. I’ve been charging oil for 50 years and I think I know what I’m doing.
Frustrated

Second time in for same oil leak. This time they say it is the oil cooler. They should have listened to me the first time.
Also doing the fuel pump recall. What could possibly go wrong.
