Shouldn't matter. You'd still likely get the aux switch unavailable message when you're battery starts to go. I did with mine. '22 3.6l e torque.

The 48volt does more than just run the ESS, it will also periodically add as much as 90 ft lbs of torque to the driveline, usually in low gears from a stop to increase acceleration.
I thought only from a stop for about half a revolution of the wheel?

I guess I don't know if that's the case or not, but it feels like it does way more than that. I guess the most force is required right at the beginning to move the vehicle from a dead stop, so maybe that's all it takes to get things rolling off the line quicker. It's noticeable when it kicks in, and it will also kick in off road when I'm on an obstacle sometimes. I love it, zero complaints, except im annoyed when it doesn't kick in and I want it lol.

Good to know about the 90ft lbs….ty
I've seen the number vary from 70 to 90 from different sources. I go with 90 cuz it sounds better lol.

Just replaced both batteries in the wife’s jeep. No warning signs. She left work. Got in the jeep. Hit the button and only got a click. replaced both batteries and all is good now.

Thanks for the advice, ….Yes, agree, time to replace and get ahead of future dead battery. Come to find out, I do have the Etourqe with tow package, so no aux, just the large 48 volt. Stupid question coming….; is it simply a matter of going to Walmart or auto shop and buying a 48 volt battery and just easy removal and replacement?
TIA

Yes. That’s what I did except went to Batteries Plus. With eTorque the only warning I got was the ESS message in the dash said ESS not ready.

Very interesting because of all the excellent responses, this is the first one that includes a “message “ other than “Aux switch not available “ What is crazy for me, is that there are messages for everything with these vehicles, you would think there would be a clear concise simple message like “ you battery is running low or is at the end of its lifespan, please service”….Is that asking too much?

My JL sport doesn't seem to even have a dedicated battery warning light. I don't see one illuminate when in the accessory position. I pulled the control connector off the alternator and got the message "stop safely, vehicle will shut off soon" and a battery symbol on the screen. I guess they figure that we are too stupid to pay attention to an idiot light.

There is signs but no real warnings until I would assume it gets real bad.
- I noticed firstly that mine didn’t turn over quite as quick when starting.
-Then one day the Jeep was turned off while I was testing a tire deflator and after I pumped the tire back up there wasn’t enough power to start the Jeep. Had to boost.
- Final occurrence, I was in a small community for a week with lots of very short runs. On my last day there the alarm system, when doors were locked, for the day alone was enough to drain the battery enough that it wouldn’t start. Boosted and off I went to the local parts store and replaced the battery. That was 2 months ago, no issue since.

So with that said it affirms that the eTorque battery doesn’t aid in starting other then when the vehicle is in gear and start/stop is activated.

same here
at least lead acid would give you warning sign there are failing.
agm’s just quit. As a 70 old retired auto tech. You and I both no, there’s no such thing as a maint. Free battery .
like front end parts tie rod ends, ball joints, ect.with no grease fittings, nonservable means they wear out faster As they can’t be lubed but fail prematurely.
on the flip side , getting over 120,00 miles on an engine was an abnormally 🤔

It's possible for JL/AGM batteries to fail suddenly internally, but it's likely somewhat uncommon.

Unfortunately, recognizing early signs of age-related battery failure through normal vehicle operation can be sort of an art; it can be made more of a science with external tools like a multi/voltmeter, battery tester(s), and/or JScan.

Mine didn’t just fail. It showed signs of weakening until the point it just didn’t have the staying power it once did. That being said it’s no different than a regular lead acid battery that weakens over time or simply just freezes up on a cold day.
