ae is the more recent revision of those 2 part numbers. Either something was tweaked in its design or construction, or they switched the supplier of that particular part.

AD stands for the Latin phrase anno domini, which means in the year of our Lord. The AE is less entertaining. I did a lot of research on this one..

In the auto component supply world the rev level of parts often times is indicated by the change of a letter in the suffix. In this case the part changed from ad ae. This also would be what many would call a “minor” change. Meaning that in the even of service part requirement, the part could be replaced by using the most recent parts.

there are some instances..... example safely critical part.... if there is an Engineering change, the modification could be deemed as “major”. In this type of event, the actual part number itself would change. The revision level of the part number would go back to the condition of not having the second letter however the numbers would be different.

probably way more of an explanation than what you wanted.

Everyone pretty much nailed it already, but to show a practical example- when they kept tweaking the aluminum steering box, the newer revisions had lower letters of the alphabet at the end: AA, then AB, then AC, etc. all the way to AE I think. Then they released the black steel steering box and it was a completely different part # that ended in AA. By the time I got around to having it installed it ended in AB.
