My daughter's 2021 Jeep Cherokee has had an intermittent problem of surging while stopping or stopped. She told me about it happening and was terrified that it was going to cause her to hit someone or something. At first it would only do it when she was pulling into a parking spot, but then it happened while she was sitting at a red light. It happens very intermittently, goes weeks without a problem.

I was finally able to experience it while pulling it into my driveway when I stopped. The accelerator goes up and down rather quickly. I am sure that my foot was not on the accelerator and I only had my foot (firmly) on the brake. It surges pretty hard. I put it in reverse and stopped and the accelerator went up and down even more.

I took it to our Jeep service department, they found no code, and legitimately tried to reproduce the problem with no luck. They reset the TPS and we all hoped for the best.

Well, it happened again this week when she was parked at a red light. She put on the emergency brake, turned off the Jeep. When she turned it back on it was fine.

I took it back to the dealer yesterday and I hope they are able to fix it. My daughter is already an anxious driver and she's very nervous to drive her Jeep. I don't blame her after I experienced it - it really surges.

I've read online of others having this problem with all types of Jeeps - including wranglers. However, from what I read the fix for the vehicles varied so much, was magic, or has not been resolved.

Anyone else had this happen?

Note: while I have a Wrangler (my first), I've had numerous Cherokees, a Commander, and a Grand Cherokee, and never have I experienced this.

Thanks.

We've seen this before and it's always incredibly difficult to reproduce and narrow down. The TPS/APP sensors are sensitive. If ANY un-commanded surge was present it WILL set a DTC 100% of the time.

The fact it doesn't means the PCM is expecting the surge. Each of the above sensors have a dual sensor system for redundancy, if one ever doesn't agree with the other a DTC is set. For them both to fail at the same time and in both identical ways is almost unheard of.

Seeing as this isn't the case, there must be another cause that the PCM is aware of. It could be some oddness with the torque converter, additional fuel being added because of a sensor giving a bad reading, or something simple like the fuel pump check valve failing letting additional vapor in through the purge system (though this usually causes a stall, not a surge)

Honestly without a code something like this is incredibly difficult to diagnose. You might just be better off waiting for the problem to become worse before it sets a code, but if you're worried about your daughter don't be afraid to trade it in.

Thank you for the response. Hopefully, they will be able to diagnose and fix the problem. Otherwise, as you suggested we may have to trade it in.

You're actually in luck, there's a TSB on this exact problem. It involves replacing the accelerator pedal. Tell your dealership to lookup TSB 14-002-22. Looks like it is indeed a case of poorly calibrated APP sensors. Explains why you're not getting a code, too.

I got a voicemail message from the service manager last night. He said that TSB 14-002-22 may be spot on. They are going to check that and let me know. Thanks again.

Update: It appears that this was the fix. We have not had the problem ever since. 3 dealerships could not figure out the problem/solution, but you did. Thanks so much!

Such a shame that 3 dealers don't know how to lookup TSBs.

True. I was also surprised that none of them had heard of the problem. Initially, I was told to make sure that my daughter's foot wasn't slipping (the surge happened to me too), or her floor mat was not rolling up on the pedal. (The mat is flat rubber from the factory - you would have to remove it to roll it and it would not be easy.)

Yes. Twice now I've rear-ended someone at a red light in two months. Only 43000 miles on jeep wrangler 2021. Not yet solved.

I am very sorry to hear this. Since they replaced my daughter's accelerator pedal, we have not experienced this problem. Have you shown this TSB to your dealer?
