Learn something new every dayI disagree with this. It has evolved to cater to people who want this, but it wasn't always so. It was designed originally based on the engineering test mule named Elvis that was a Sport TJ that they added locking Dana 44s and a 4 to 1 modified transfer. I had a 99 Sahara which was the "premium" package from that era and the base Rubicon when it debuted in 03' was much closer to a sport. Not that there was much in the way of luxury in a TJ, but the Rubicon didn't have the same standard features as the Sahara, and couldn't even be optioned with some Sahara exclusive items. Like body colored flares, or ABS. Remember that in the TJ era, the Sport was not the bottom of the lineup, it was similar to Today's Willys just below the Sahara.
Today's Willys actually hits most of the marks for what made the TJ Rubicon different from the Sport. 44s, locking differential, lower diff gears, bigger flares, and bigger tires. Really only the front locker, goofy diamond plate, and the 4 to 1 transfer gears are missing.
