This is my second JLUR. This was my first Walked away from a totaled Rubicon | 2018+ Jeep Wrangler Forums (JL / JLU) - Rubicon, Sahara, Sport, Unlimited - JLwranglerforums.com . I knew I wanted the replacement to be the same color and was looking for similar options. However, I upgraded with some options that weren't on the original version, including steel bumpers, matching hard top and fenders, tow package/auxiliary switches, and the cold weather group. I went with these additional options mainly because that's what the dealer had on their lot at the time and I was impatient. I ended up being happy with all the additional options, specially the factory aux. switches. I don't get much use out of the cold weather group here in southern CA, but it's nice to have while out skiing or when the top and doors are off on a cool day.

This is what I started with:

JLUR 3.6L
LED lights
Steel bumpers
Tow package and auxiliary switches
Cold weather package
Matching hardtop and fenders
8.4" Uconnect

First mod was adding a Smittybilt XRC Gen 3 9500 winch and recovery gear.

Second mod was hitting a tree and denting the front bumper end cap. I didn't mind too much since they were coming off anyway, but I also bent the bumper slightly. I tried installing a Mopar winch guard but the bolt holes wouldn't line up with the bent bumper.

Next was the lift, tires and wheels, tire carrier, and Flashcal F5 Programmer. I went with the Icon Vehicle Dynamics Stage 5 2.5" lift with 2.5" reservoir shocks. A lot of my off roading is in desert areas so I wanted a shock that can handle the heat. I also went with Icon 17x8.5 Rebound wheels and KO2 35's. Before and after measurements showed that I actually gained about 4.5" of lift. I had a hard time deciding on AT or MT tires, but stuck with the KO2's since I have used them on most of my other trucks and they're snow rated. Plus I can always replace them with MT's once they wear down. Added a Smittybilt HD Pivot tire carrier to handle the heavier wheel.

I'm very happy with the Icon lift system and wheels. It handles great both on and off road. I've had a few "oh shit" moments going a little too fast in sand washes and hitting bumps and ruts, but this suspension just eats it up. Great on the rocks, too.

The winch and lift were installed at a local shop. Everything that follows I did myself.

Lights:
Went with the Baja Design LP6's up front using the upfitter lockout harness connected to the factory auxiliary switches. Swapped out the factory LED fog lights with a pair of BD Squadron-R amber lights. Finally, installed BD Reverse Kit Dual S2 Sports lights. The LP6's are so bright that I doubt I'll never need to add any additional lighting.

Added a Vector aluminum platform and cargo net to increase rear storage space. I can hold two Front Runner Wolf Pack boxes on it and still have room for my tent and other gear.

When I went to the body shop to get the rest of my stuff out of the totaled JLUR I also took the headlines and installed them in the new one.

Interior mounts: Went with 67 Design mounts for the phone and GoPro. Then used the JeepUniq ball mount for the Garmin In Reach Mini. 67 Design makes great products and also has great customer service. I ordered the wrong ball mount when placing the original order. Rather than just sending everything the way I ordered it, 67 Design shipped the compatible parts, then emailed me to let me know one of the mounts was not compatible. Once the part was confirmed, they then shipped it separately and waived the shipping fee.

Installed the Genesis Dual Battery kit with two Odyssey batteries. The OEM auxiliary battery and high amp fuse failed twice in a five month period, leaving us stuck in busy intersections and needing a tow to the dealer. "Luckily" these failure happened close to home and not while off road in the middle of nowhere. After doing a lot of research, mostly on this forum, I decided to go with the Genesis system and do away with the OEM aux battery altogether. My winch, 2 BD LP6 lights, and ARB twin compressor are now connected to the Genesis bus bars and I may add a frig in the future. The install was a bit intimidating since I haven't done anything like this before. The Genesis install video does a great job explaining the process, but it still took me a good 3 to 4 hours.

I added a Smittybilt Hi lift jack mount to the Smittybilt HD Pivot tire carrier. It does a good job keeping the jack secure, but I don't like how high the jack handle extends beyond the hardtop. I only attach the jack when I go off road and so far it hasn't been an issue, except for the one time I forgot to take it off before pulling into the garage. I heard an awful crunching sound and knew exactly what it was. I was expecting to see damage to the tailgate or tire carrier, but luckily the handle hit a soft spot on the garage trim and only damaged the house. My wife was not as happy about this as I was, specially since we just had the house painted. I doubt I'll make that mistake again, but just in case I now put something in the garage to block entrance after attaching the jack.

Luckily the dark brown trim is made of styrofoam and the jack handle cut through it like butter. Had it hit lower on the garage the outcome could have been a lot worse.

The white debris on the tire carrier is part of the garage trim.

I don’t think it will make much of a difference but there is a lot of discussion regarding this issue on the forum. I had the aluminum steering box replaced with the steel one and that helped more. Not sure if that’s the case with your recon.
