My first Jeep was a 2006 LJ with 4.5" lift and 35" mud terrains. I loved that Jeep. It got me anywhere I wanted to go and a few places I didn’t.
Being my first Jeep I had no idea what my goals were or what I needed to get there. So I followed a meandering build path that led me to much heavier tires on a Jeep that was too tall and no longer fun to drive on the streets. Acceleration, braking, cornering, talking to the wife at speed, all took a hit for the ability to crawl over rocks I wasn’t looking to conquer.
I bought the new 2018 JL to start over. The goal is to wander more and worry less.
I chose the 2 door manual because it’s more suited to my needs/wants: Fun and easy to maneuver. The 4 door auto may have been a better choice for an overlander, but I’m stubborn that way.

Update 6/22/2025
After failing to stay stock, I changed a few things and then changed them again! This Jeep continues to surprise me on trails I thought I really should not be on. Amazing what these machines will do, even fresh off the showroom floor!
Update 9/13/2025
After much thought and research I bought some Mickey Thompson AT's for better all around grip. NorthRidge4x4 had a sale and I missed the 35's, so I stepped up to 37's. Feels like I've stepped right back into bigger tires than I should have. Moab next month will let me know if it was a mistake.
Update 12/12/2025
Mickey Thompson AT's are amazing, but had to sell the 37's and move back to 35's. I like my Jeep lighter and the 37's were too big of a hit with the manual in pep, stopping, and even turning on the trails. I've also taken to cleaning up the scraps and pulling the stereo. Either to prep for sale or to keep her. Waffling continues as Wanderer has never disappointed.
Wanderer Plans
I've been looking for a JLUR XR for many reasons, but most of all more room for friends and family.
The JLUR XR will have 4.56 gears from the factory and the new 35's will keep to stock sizing while adding the extra capability off road. It will also get the ARB compressor, shocks, and some few other bits as I still plan to explore. Will see if it turns into the camper I sometimes feel I should have gotten.
Live well and thank you for checking in on my adventures.
