My 2018 JLUR 3.6L 8AT is about to hit 30k and in march I'll have it for 2 years.

I plan on taking it to the dealer for the 30k mile service maintenance. Around how much should I be charged for?

Taking it in for service without being specific about what needs to be done is a sure way to get swindled out of a lot of money.

And 99% of the things you can do it yourself for a fraction of the cost and a peace of mind.

Agree - go online or look in your manual to see what the 30K maintenance entails - probably a lot of "checks" but also several simple things like changing the air filter. A new air filter cost maybe $20 online or at an auto parts store (heck maybe the dealer).

Takes all of 5 minutes or less to change. Dealer service will charge you $50 and up probably. Go over the 30K service requirements and see what you can do. If there is something you can't or don't want to do then go into the service department and specifically tell them what you need done as Arterius2 mentions.

Oh, and watch for all the "recommended extras" like fuel injector cleaning - pure dealer profit - if it's not on the 30K list "just say no" unless there is an actual problem with your jeep.

What the last two guys said. The service department is going to try to upsell you and make as much profit off of you as possible. The local dealership here was trying to have both differentials and transfer case fluids changed for a gal that I know has never taken her JK off pavement.

Download the mopar app and it gives you a recommended maintenance schedule. However i am of the mind to change fluids long before the factory recommended schedule. At 7k miles i did front / rear diffs and transfer case. Very cheap if you DIY but dealer prices for these are insane. Rear diff fluid was black too. Dealer will tell you the trans fluid lasts a "lifetime" but ZF recommends 60k miles.

The ZF transmission fluid is probably one of the few things we can’t change by ourselves.

And this sort of bugs me.

I don't know what the book time for it is. But sure it's a lot more than the ~$200 my previous cars were. Of the videos i have watched seems like one way would be to drain, put some miles on it and repeat two or three times.

Easiest way to change it is using the machine that connects to the cooler lines. As the old fluid is pumped in, the machine pumps the new fluid into the cooler.

You might be interested in this whopping 20 minute video on how to check the correct fluid level in a ZF8 transmission.
I fell asleep at one point in the video but the amount of shenanigans involved is just downright criminal and makes me feel that this was done partly on purpose to deter people from doing it themselves.

A 3 page essay on how to check the fluid level, no wonder they tell you it's got "lifetime" fluid and call it a day. When the warranty runs out, it's someone else's problem.

At 17:40, he technician says this could be a TWO days process. I wonder what the book time $$ is on that? The dealers couldn't even do a regular oil change or tire rotation correctly, I wouldn't trust them anywhere near it with this procedure.

Yeah, i watched that a few weeks ago. Just shook my head. I would take it to a trans shop before i went to the dealer.

I mean as a DIY. If the prices come down sure, i will just pay someone if its reasonable. But it sounds like quite the process ($$$) to flush this fluid if its anything like the above video.

I really need to to get my oil changed now, I could have them do the 30k mile inspection and see how much it would be and if I feel it's too expensive I can just say no and do it myself right?

I have the mopar lifetime warranty, I won't void it if I do the maintenance myself right or have a shop do it for me?

I would want to change front and rear axle fluid and transfer case fluid? How hard is this to do?

Thanks guys

You won't void your warranty changing your own fluids. Replacing the diff and transfer case fluid is just as easy as an oil change on these. For the transfer case you may want to remove the skid plate. You don't have to but its less of a mess if you do. Watch a youtube video if your not sure.

I just order fluids direct from Amsoil and it gets here in 2 days.

Download the app, it shows service schedule.

I would never let a dealer change fluids (including the freebie ones from Jeep Wave), but that’s just me... ditto for quick change places. It’s dead simple to do yourself, but if you have no tools or nowhere to do it then find a reliable, honest mechanic. Building a rapport with a good shop will pay dividends later on when you need a big repair.
