Well, not to get extreme...but, I did serve under some senior NCOs that had been in places like Guadalcanal and Tarawa. We still were practicing climbing cargo nets. Quonsets? Yup..boot camp, ITR, Electronics Schools, Staging BN, Casual Co. Nicest billet I ever was in was at Balboa Naval Hospital.

Yes, Bragging camp is going well, thanks. I'll brag all day about surviving that "misspent youth", as Smedley Butler put it.
Cargo nets in an elevated sea state - now there's an experience:).

I started out with open squad bays and by the time I retired(2012) they had been building the "Holiday Inn" style barracks at the cyclic rate (had to spend all that GWOT money while Congress was in a giving mood). More like college dorm rooms - 2 to a room and a shared head if memory serves, a drastic improvement over the old barracks. Hey, have to keep the all volunteer force motivated.

Yep - Quonset huts still available at SOI, Camp Upshur (Quantico) and other garden spots. Most have AC in them now.

Oh here we go... AC in the Quonsets at SOI? The Corps has gone soft!

Ah, today's youth and creature comforts - although they are a hell of a lot smarter than I ever was. I thought we were going to hell in a hand cart when I was back at Quantico driving around and saw OCS had new dorm style barracks with AC.

A far cry from doing up downs in a plain old quonset hut at Camp Upshur in July under the watchful eye of GySgt Crenshaw until he got tired:) (you always rememberer the name of your DI/Platoon Sargent).

I got to Parris Island in 2003, Right when the digital camo pattern became the standard. No AC in the squad bays, and no heat in the Quonsets at MCT when I got there in November and it was freezing cold at night. Then I get to Ft Sill for artillery school and we're in the same squad bays the Army uses for their boot camp, so we're still in sub-comfortable living conditions. They shipped my class to Coronado, CA for the Naval Gunfire portion of our training, and conditions were slightly better, but it was still a semi-private squad bay, similar to the Canadian boot camp "rooms" they have.

I'll tell you when I got to the fleet and I had a room with only one roomate, I thought I was living it up. Cheap furniture, and painted cinder block walls, but hey it was just one other guy and not 80... lol!

Good afternoon all. A few pics from today’s adventure. I didn’t really find any interesting trails today but it was nice to be out in the countryside.
