Other than the stock latches not locking, are people having issues with them or just running out of stuff to upgrade?

I have these and they lock. Look pretty good and been there over a year now...

I put those on my '20 - great item me thinks.

I don't think you can ever run out of stuff to upgrade or change, given all the accessory vendors for Jeeps and their offerings - I changed mine because I didn't like the idea of these punks that have been spotted in town going around at night pulling on door handles trying to (and sometimes being successful at) open peoples' doors and stealing whatever they can from inside...I figured it would only be a matter of time before they realized the Jeep hoods don't lock and they could open it and steal something like a battery (or two).

Ive had these locking latches from Drake for over 6 months now and haven't had any issues. They are adjustable so you can always keep the hood at a tight fit. And an install tip, face the locking portion of the hood pin towards the windshield. This helps keep debris out of the key hole.

Can these be used and still locked without the wire?

I don't see why not... You would just need to snip the wire. It won't affect its locking capability or structural integrity, just leaves you with a couple of extra items to keep track of when your hood is open, where the attached wire wont allow you to lose them.
