i was wondering if anyone had experienced any issues with their surge brakes when backing a trailer? The vehicle is supposed to send a signal to the trailer when backing do the brakes won’t engage. Mine doesn’t work. I have the factory tow package using the 7 pin. Thanks.

Trailer surge brakes don't use an electrical signal from your wiring harness. They only work when the system is under compression, for example when stopping, the momentum of the trailer pushes the mechanism. When you are reversing you are also putting the system into compression. The surge brake controller on your trailer tongue should have a disconnect for reversing.

Some surge brakes have an electrical solenoid that gets power from the reverse lights of the 7 pin. First look at the hitch to see if yours is made with the solenoid the look at pin to check for power. Hope this helps

Thanks. The trailer works with my 250 and suburban but the brakes lock when backing in the Jeep.

Hi Stormin’ Moorman,

Sorry to hear of the trouble you’re experiencing. If you are not able to remedy the concern with the advice provided here, we kindly recommend connecting with your local Jeep dealer. We are available via private message if you are in need of any assistance with that process.
