That was my first thought, but then I thought "Nah, heat pumps don't work in the cold...why would they install one up there??"Propane IS the emergency heat.The system actually has a air source heat pump and air conditioner. But the heat pump doesn’t work after the temps drop below a certain point.

Well here’s the reason. The propane furnace was necessary. Apparently so was the central air. To add the heat pump option was only slightly more expensive and works as a handy option during the inbetween seasons. (It’s the same unit as the ac. Just spins backwards.)
