I am 66 years old and thanks to several noisey hobbies and jobs, I am hard of hearing. Yep, I'm the white haired old man setting next to you at the stop light with the engine reving to 5500 rpm. I just can't hear it running.

To fix the issue, I had a Magnaflow type straight through muffler installed to enable me to hear it running......didn't work. Sounds better going down the road but I can't hear it at idle.

Thursday morning I go in for a resonatorectomy. We'll see if that helps......

I have the magnaflow as well and find it to be a bit too quiet. Removing the resonator might be my next move. Keep us posted on the results! I'm curious if there will be any drone.

Well, the resonatorectomy is done. I can report it is louder and there is a very small amount of drone now.....but not enough to bother me. It's really just noisier on the highwag.

As far as idle at a stoplight, it is still quiet. There is a bit of rumble...not V8 rumble but something you can barely hear. So at this point, my efforts have not worked well at idle. If I was starting all over, I would delete the stock muffler and see how that sounds.

Based on my experience, a cat back is a huge waste of money. Go to a local muffler shop and do a a muffler delete or replace the stock muffler with an aftermarket one. Much cheaper and sounds good! Just not loud at idle.

Preach. I can relate to the sufferance.

My car prior to the JL was a perfectly tuned rally car (grey beard and all). You were more than well aware that the thing was running - from blocks away. When I got the JL, I have literally walked away from the JL whilst the engine still running and not realizing that I had not turned it off because it was so quiet.

I've since then installed an AFe catback, and am now more frequently reminded there's a motor under the thing at idle.

I really do miss the rumble from my 2.0L rally car, and no - i'm not even kidding in the slightest.

This thread reminds me of the joke about the Texas Aggie who put duct tape on his ears so he wouldn't catch hearing aids.
I guess if I spent $5000 on hearing aids I could hear the engine. However, I would also lose the excuse of not being able to hear my wife when she is talking to me......

So you want us all to end up needing noisey exhausts later in life as a result of your exhaust choices :)

These engines aren't loud at idle even with the muffler completely removed. You should look elsewhere if you want to hear the engine at idle. And trust me when I say that a majority of people do not care to hear your engine.

Rockmanoff or whatever your name is, trust me when I say your opinion about anything means nothing to me .........mate. Being Australian, your comprehension of the written American language is lacking. I believe I stated the exhaust was still quiet and would have no impact on neighbors.

My mother taught me long ago that if I had nothing good to say, I should say nothing. You apparently did not learn that lesson, so let me put it plainly.....If you have nothing good or something constructive to add, keep your pie hole shut. This forum would be a much better place if YOU and those like you could learn that.....but my guess is learning is a foreign concept to you.

A suggestion from a 67-year-old who also damaged his hearing from exposure to gunfire, jet engines, motorcycles and too-loud music: Extricate your head from that dark hole it's in.

I didn't even bother to read that drivel :cwl:

Keep your various noises to yourself because some of us live in a civilized society. Not even animals would appreciate the company of the likes of you.

This reply came out of nowhere. People install louder, custom exhausts all the time. What's the big deal?

Well, not 66 yet... have a few years to go...but I am another grey haired dude at the stop light. I figure however loud you want your ride is personal subjective choice and everyone will have their own opinion whether they like it or not. Many newer vehicles for drivers that want to feel or hear their engines actually a run portion of the exhaust pipe directly under the drivers seat and then port it back to the main tube for exit. This gives the driver the feeling they are wanting without the need for being louder. I am sure a custom shop could rig something up on a JL pretty easily.

The JL is pretty darn quite thats for sure..

The OP is well aware of what hearing loss is yet he doesn't mind others losing their hearing as a result of his aesthetic choices. For example, speak to a someone who gets migraines or has little kids who don't sleep easily or has heart conditions or has to work the night shift and ask if they like noisey exhausts.

Rockmaninoff, you have two parts of brain, 'left' and 'right'. In the left side, there's nothing right. In the right side, there's nothing left.
