That's unfortunate. My experience with unions is more that, when it comes to possible termination, they act along the lines of a defense attorney - they ensure fairness in the process and that everyone has representation. People can, (and do) still lose their jobs.I didn't get a raise at my first job for 3 years because the union president and Mayor Bloomberg couldn't agree on a contract. That union had forced membership, and would dictate everything about your employment contract. You were essentially unable to be fired for anything. The guy next to me would sleep all day in his cubicle. He made more than me and would get promotions first.
I hated that system because it took away my ability to set my own terms, be rewarded for my hard work, and otherwise set my own path. I think that was an example of a union that had become too powerful in my opinion.
