Would be nice if they sold just the mounting kit and we can obtain our own rack that’s compatible

I read somewhere that Rhino Rack Vortex series had a 220 pound dynamic limit - which is more than almost all roof top tents.
I had the vortex, it’s good for other items but my tent put lots of strain and I was constantly worried about my gutter mounts. Rhino rack site says 80lbs limit. My personal opinion - it’s 80lbs static, 50lbs dynamic before lots of flexing and squeeking occurs.

Returned my vortex (amazon) and am getting a Gobi or max

Nate from Kargo Master replied to my email today, as with most of the exoskeleton roof rack makers, KMS is still in the development stage for a JL rack. Their Congo Sport rack (<$700) for the JK is advertised as “completely bolt on”, without having to drill into the roof or the body. Front mounts to the windshield stantions, and the rear downlegs attach to a metal bumper, or a bracket that shares the bumper’s attachment to the frame.... hoping they get one to market for the JL sooner than later....

It’s possible, my tent is a Tepui 4 person (225lbs) and it strained the gutter mounts to a point were I was constantly checking / concerned. For a 2 person tent - maybe its ok since its almost 100lbs lighter.

Trying to order a maximus bracket kit without the Rhino rack. The plan is to bolt the tent directly to it - but will post any updates once the bracket kit is received.

Hi all!
Can’t decide on what permanent rack I want yet so I’m wanting a removable solution for now. We’re new to the Jeep world and still seeing how we use it and what our needs are from a rack. One thing I know for sure is between a baby, an 80 lb dog, and my husband and I, we need more storage for even just basic camping trips. We’ve squeezed us all plus a tent and our bags, but there’s not room for the inflatable paddle board or any other extras.

SO! The guy at the local rack store sold me on Thule AeroBlades. Any thoughts on these vs. other non-permanent solutions? Also, deciding which basket to add? I’m asking because I just saw a Thule set up on another vehicle (not a Jeep) and didn’t love it. It looked like it sat up really high off the roof.

As of right now, it’s a very stock JLUR.

Would love your thoughts or experiences!

Thanks everyone for keeping the list of racks updated. I was able to get the Maximus-3 rack just in time for our two week road trip. It works great with my rooftop tent and awning.

Good to know. The Thule 300 is rated 165 lbs dynamic load, and I may do the Smittybilt Roof Top Tent Net weight @ 117 lbs. My 2 kids weight about 140 lbs in total, or better if it can hold 1 adult with 1 kid @ 300 lbs. Will see how the goes.

that’s significantly lighter, however some gutters are metal / ours are fiberglass I think and that 165lbs might be a general rating and not specific to our roofs. At the tent weight though I think it would be fine. Share some pics pls if you can

@BrianB that is a stunning photo. Please tell us everything about your iKamper!
Yes, @BrianB do tell! I dove in for this setup last week, and am drooling over your picture while I wait for mine to arrive. Questions:

1. Did you install it, or did you have someone else do it? Any tips I should know before I begin?
2. How far past the front of the Rack does the tent extend? Any pics of the front end that would show how much of the Freedom panel area is blocked?

Thanks, and congrats. Setup looks great!

With the rack on it is difficult to bolt on the tent because there is limited space between the rack and the Jeep to secure the tent. I was able to remove the Freedom Panels to secure the bolts to the front part of the rack no problem but the back was difficult. The tent rail sits right on the gap between the slats so you don't need to do any modification to the rack.

1. I built the rack and had someone do the mounts. I couldn't get up the courage to drill into my roof. When you buy the rack from Maximus, it comes with instructions from Rhino and Maximus. Big tip - Use the Rhino instruction on how to build the rack but use the Maximus instructions for the support bars under the slats and make sure it matches their configuration. (This is important so that the brackets line up with the rack.)

2. I got the long rack and the tent goes past the rack by 9.5 inches. This doesn't matter much because the tent is still supported by the rack. I installed a wind deflector to cut down on the wind noise a little.

I also installed a Rhino Batwing Awning on the driver side. Also a little tight but doable.

I just came back from a 2 week trip with my two boys (7 & 10) and my wife. I was able to store 3 of the sleeping bags in the tent when closed and just stuffed the 4th in the Jeep. It only took a minute to setup the tent for the evening and about 5 to close it up in the morning. The awning is also quick and very useful at campsites with no shade. (I haven't tested it in the rain yet.) I have used a regular tent in the past on 2 week camping trips and this configuration saves me so much time and stress. I love it.

The rack is about 40lbs, tent 165ish with sleeping bags, and 60 for the awning. You do feel the weight with everyone in the Jeep and our camping supplies. I may have to do something about back sagging down on the next trip.

So you had the same problem I did trying to attach the tent to the rack. I wonder if there was someway to add around 3/4" to the space between the rack and the roof. Hmmm. I plan on taking my tent off during the winter, so I want to come up with a solution by then.

If you don't mind me asking, how far does that awning hang off the side of the Jeep? I really want an awning, but I don't think my tent would allow it.

So, I pull my trigger on the Smittybilt RTT, I'll have it installed on the 18th. I have been trying to figure how I can get it RTT On & Off the rack. What I've plan are

1> Using Wing Nuts instead of the regular Nuts it comes with
2> I am consider using Hitch Game Hoist: https://www.amazon.com/HME-Products-Truck-Hitch-Hoist/dp/B06ZZS6M9L
3> I may also consider adding something like this Yakima Longarm Pickup Truck Extender, so that sleeping on top of the Jeep Hardtop wouldn't put all the weight onto the hardtop.
https://www.amazon.com/Yakima-LongA...=8-3&keywords=Yakima+LongArm+Height+Extension

I'll see how that goes and keep everyone posted =D

@BrianB thanks for all the detail, and tips. It seems the low profile Maximus-3/Rhino Rack combo is a bit of a two-edged sword: Looks great, and keeps overall height down, but makes it a bear to get the tent on/off.

@baggio16 you mentioned maybe adding space between the hardtop and the rack. What about a tall mount that would add the space (although, more than you asked for) between the rack and the tent - like this one for $59 from Front Runner: https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/us/rack-accessories/front-runner-tent-mount-kit-tall.html

Or if you really want to help stimulate the economy, a quick release system like this one for $299 also from Front Runner: https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.c...es/quick-release-roof-top-tent-mount-kit.html

It’s pricey at three bills, and you’d have to confirm dimensions to see how the mounting holes line up on the Rhino Rack pioneer platform slats (extra drilling may be needed), and it leaves an ugly 3.7” gap between rack and rails on RTT, but man, it sure would streamline the mount/dismount process. I’m giving some serious thought to doing one of these two solutions myself.
