Best rooftop tent for a 2-Door?

I'm looking to take my newly purchased JL Sport camping this summer. I see lots of rooftop tents for the 4 door versions, but not many for the 2 door. I can get why, half the space up top when compared to a 4 door. However, there must be an efficient and sensible tent for the 2 door no? Would like to hear some thoughts and suggesstions. Or, if there are different alternatives recommended, id like some insight.

Most of the time a Wrangler has a RTT it seems it's always a 4 door yeah, but generally the "overland" crowd loves their gear and they would never be able to fit everything in a 2 door and stay organized so that's likely why not many 2 doors are set up like that. I'll just throw mine into the 2 door RTT pile, Yakama skyrise 3 medium with a Deezee 4 door rack I set up differently. I would love to upgrade to a hardshell but having a tough time selling this one

Apparently we're the exceptions to the rule. 4dr people are usually shocked by what I can pull out of my 2dr. It is absolutely possible.

Following this thread because I haven't found a 2dr RTT that seems better than my stand-alone tent.

You might want to look at "Inspired Overland Carbon Fiber RTT". It is about 80 lbs and 5" when closed. I tried with a couple of other RTT and they were not only too heavy but too high. I have a 22 JL Rubicon ( 2-door). Mine should be here soon.

I’ll always recommend a ground tent, and spend the rest on camping gear, but that’s just me. I’ll never be able to understand how people are spending 2-3 grand on a hundred dollar tent that goes on their roof. The market is just crazy out there!

@cderoin92 RTT aren't "limited" by two or four doors. They have a footprint, and your "roof top" is about six feet long, right?

Just pick what works for you, 48"x48" or 48"X56" or 48"x72" (knowing they fold open at about twice the narrowest side, from 48" closed to 90ish inches open). It also doesn't matter if the footprint is longer than your roof, just let it hang over the windshield a few inches if it needs to. There is no two door or four door RTT, there is just RTT.

I don't understand this part of the wrangler user manual.

When they say there's a 100lb weight limit on roof "when equipped with a luggage rack", is that a weight limit from the official rack itself or the hard-top structure?

I've ran the ikamper mini and the Roofspace 2, both of which work well on the 2-door. I prefer the space and comfort of the Roofspace 2 and it's extremely well made. The ikamper is fine for one person, but no extra room for anything when you've got 2 people in there. Roofspace has LOTS of extra room and the mattress is comfy

I’ve seen some great compact builds using the OPEN ROAD roof top tents on 2-door Jeeps. Super low-profile, doesn’t kill your mpg, and fits right over the rear half of the roof. I use a hitch-mounted swing-out carrier for extra gear since a roof top tent eats up the roof space. As far as alternatives go, I also tried a rear seat delete with a sleeping platform inside—cozy, but nowhere near as cool as sleeping up top under the stars.

I had two different setup on my 2 doors.

First one was a thin, small aluminum rtt that I brought when I had my Nissan Xterra pro4x. Cab space wasn't a problem so I had my mattress, blankets and pillows in the cab.
Then I switched to a 2 doors JL and realized I was really space-limited. I switched my rtt for a hardshell and I can leave mattress, blankets, pillows, some clothes and others things in it while close. It is also a lot more comfy to sleep 2 person in it.

BUT, it is big (11" thick) and heavy (165lbs). On windy days I have a hard time keeping 120kmh, and shifting to 6th speed is not an option (manual 6 speed with stock 4.10 gears). It can also be pretty sketchy with all that weight on top when you are off-camber or flexing side to side on a trail.

I'm currently dealing between keeping that really comfortable but heavy and sketchy setup, going back to a smaller rtt and dealing with limited space, even considering a pop-up ground tent like a gazelle and dealing with space.

It all comes down to what you are doing with your jeep.
Hardcore offroad and camp at the end of the day ? Definitely a ground tent, maybe a small rtt
Mild offroad and overland, a hardshell that you can store things in it is pretty nice.
Or just camping a couple times and some light to mild offroad I would go with a ground tent. Because it isn't worth the trouble to spend money on a rtt but also a roof rack, losing mpg and having to adapt your driving on windy days and can't drop your soft top anymore.
