Yeah, I read your previous post about the dealer lot purgatory. F that!

From what I've gathered so far, the dealer is only needed to carry the odometer reading over to the new one, and program the splash screen to the specific model (Sport, Sahara, or Rubicon).

I don’t care about the odometer, as I will never sell the Jeep and can simply add 78k to the new reading to keep my own maintenance on schedule. I also have a Tazer mini that can change the splash screen to Rubicon, if it's not already set that way.

I'm stopping on the way home today, to see if a dealer will sell me the part. If not, I may entertain a refurbished one from that link above.
I think you're SOL trying to buy the programmed odometer. They are like that soup guy from Seinfeld lol. I would love to hear how you make out...

Regarding a used (not refurbished) IC, and maybe this was just my experience(s) with the vendor, but I've had incredibly good service and terrific used parts from LKQ online 2x.

I bought the replacement IC (the one that needs to be programmed) for $145 shipped to my residential home. Its donor was a smashed up and salvaged JL. I figured if it made it out OK with the salvage crash, it should be battle hardened.

Best of all, and I wasn't expecting this, they sent me an upgraded IC. I told them I needed a replacement for my 2020 Sport S (with the small black and white digital display in the middle of the IC) and they sent me a "compatible" IC. A full 3.5 inch color model from a JL Rubicon. Makes looking forward while driving a completely different experience. Maybe I' just a geek but I love the animated Jeep cruising across the scene at startup... Plus it has offered pages? huh, how?

BTW, 100% plug and pray. It's perfect, well, except for the miles but Ive been in touch with one of the odometer shops that appear on the first google search page (thanks Gator).

@Headbarcode if you strike out at LKQ, may want to try Car-Part.com.

That's where I'm at... Fuck 'em.

If it were me, and some people have an extreme reluctance assuming that role even for a little while, but if it were me, I'd install a used/refurbed/whatever unit. And then I'd write up a notarized affidavit that documents the difference in mileage, and keep said affidavit with the title. The next guy can sweat the number if he wants to, but it's not worth the $$$ and the PITA to me.

What happens if you just buy a new replacement part? Do you get reset to zero?

Is there any practical downside as long as you are not misrepresenting the mileage to some future buyer?

Assuming you're fully disclosing, I can think of a few considerations if one does nothing to address the actual IC/ECM discrepancy...

1. Future resale may take a hit... A few years down the road if you decide to sell and are asking top dollar, someone may be put off by the mileage discrepancy.

2. Come time to issue a new title, the issuing authority will note the discrepancy on the title. This may affect a buyer's ability to get financing when purchasing.

3. Trade In could be a problem if you're dealing with a dishonest dealer. An honest dealer will know that the fix is a mere re-flash, and it won't affect the deal much, if at all. A crooked dealer, on the other hand, will try to make as much of the issue as he can in his effort to beat down your trade in value.

Personally, these things don't concern me, as every vehicle I've ever owned has ended up in the junk yard. But if that's not your end game, these are real considerations.

Yes, I guess I should have explained that I was asking if any electronic or electro-mechanical issues are known to occur if one installs a new cluster, never has the odometer synced, and somehow upsets the control modules' logic.

I am just wondering if you really have to go to a dealer to keep your Jeep running.

Other than the mileage discrepancy they are plug and play. I got one from a Rubicon with an auto trans and within two key on cycles it recognized the MT and that it was in a Sport.

I swapped the cluster in my Jeep a few years ago and had theses folks correct the mileage. Since I had a functioning cluster I just had them set it to an estimated future mileage and swapped them when they matched. Took about a week.

I remember you doing that. What was the cost for them to set it?

I don't even give a shit what the mileage is, just as long as it works. The only value that the odometer has to me personally, is tracking my tire rotations and oil changes. It's affect on resale value isn't even a blip on the outer fringes of my radar, because I plan on going the long haul with this Jeep.

Once the factory engine starts huffing oil, a larger engine and transmission will get transplanted. I want to see how many engines the frame and body will last through. Until then, I just want to get my fuel gage back. ?

I fueled up today, not remembering how long its been and expecting to take about a half tank, and was shocked when the the pump didn't click off until about 18.75 gallons. I've never run it quite that low. I almost pushed it off until tomorrow. Very glad I didn't, otherwise my next thread would've been about the benefits of rotopax on a daily driver that passes gas stations every 2 minutes.

Exactly. I'm an old batard, so I'll do everything in the meantime that I can to make this motor last, but the day it starts to suck oil is the day that I start my 4.0 + MT build. I know I have one more engine build in me. I was hoping to save it for the 383 in the truck.

As for a gas gauge, seems to me there has to be an aftermarket stand alone unit that'll work off the signal of the sending unit.
