Sean, on those older BB's, did they have 8" guns vs the 16" on the "newer" BB's?

Bet she went quickly.
As far as I understand it, it took a while for the New York to actually sink after the blast, and that was due to the fact that there was no crew on board to do damage control. The real danger was the radiation as it would have to have been directly in the blast to "go quickly"

They had quite a variety on the older ships, ranging from 10" to 16" depending on what year they were built.

Makes sense. My dad's ship, Lady Lex CV2, was dying but the rescue ships put her out of her misery so she would sink and not be captured. Battle of the Coral Sea.

@obwahn: Mike, looking up the Vermont, looks like she had 4x 12 inch, 8x 8 inch, 12x 7 inch, 20x 3 inch guns. She was a Pre-Dreadnought, meaning it didn't have an all "big gun" design philosophy as the later battleships did.

The Lexington Shaped naval history more than they realized she would when they converted her to a carrier.
