Going the officer route in the Navy does open up a lot of career paths in R&D if you got one of the more technical careers there, but that all depends on your schooling.

The Arleigh Burkes are good ships unless you want to actually shoot the 5" Gun....

I remember the majority of time we had one on station for Naval Surface Fires they were busy fixing the gun after it broke from firing 5 rounds in a row... Give me a Battleship in the Fire Support Area and keep the Marines happy.

Ya, we talked about this before. We never had both 5" guns ready to fire at the same time I think. Always something busted. And the one that did work could only do so many rounds before it had to rest. Tons of moving parts that all had to do the right thing. I still can't believe I slept thru that shit. Our quarters were directly below #2 gun mount's loading area that matched the moving gun to the stationary part of the ship below. And the ammo went thru our quarters in the loading tubes from the magazine below us. Wild shit.

You sleep through anything if you're tired enough. I'm surprised at the amount of sleep I could get in that Afghan winter.
