Sad day and a slight rant

So this afternoon was a rough one. Back story is wife had our cat Ginger for 6 years before we started dating. During that time the cat clawed and bit every boyfriend she had. We start dating and the cat is all up on me, later she tells me it’s part of the reason she stayed with me for the long run. Eventually we get married and Ginger becomes attached to my hip when I was home and she was my stress release. Well today we had to put her down, she lived a long 18 years and gave us much happiness and joy. She will be deeply missed by our children, the wife, and myself. Rest In Peace old friend.

Now for the rant, the check up, lab work euthanasia and cremation cost $570. This is crazy to me, we had to put down another family pet about two years ago and it was much much cheaper. That was in Oklahoma though, we are in Indianapolis now. We love our vet and won’t be changing for our other cat, but the price just rubs salt in the wound when you have to say goodbye.

Ok well that’s off my chest. Anyone else experience this unfortunate expense? Seems crazy the cost difference location to location.

Sorry for your loss ....anyone who loves animals knows just how hard it is to loose them! They become your loyal being, always there! Yes the Vet situation, like every thing we have to deal with in life has really escalated up to a point that you can't even afford to give the correct care to your furry family member. I had also adopted a sister and brother from the same litter. My Mom used to take in cats and then get them fixed so where she lived they would not have strays that were fending for food. Long story short my female cat had a blockage and she could not urinate correctly...vet wants $2000 for a surgery????????? WTF I talk to a friend she tells me give her apple cider vinegar in her food (small amounts mixed with water) Guess what! It worked! she pees like a racehorse now and the vet who is now retired couldn't understand it....Sometimes there are alternatives! Sorry for the long story..I feel for you and the family. It most def is hard, but she had a good home and a family who loved her! best any animal can hope for!!

Yes it’s crazy, about 7 years ago we had a vet tell us she may last a year. She was battling a kidney infection and the medication hadn’t run it’s course. She was a tough old girl, still beating up the younger cat that weighed 4 times her weight. All in all I think she had 5 kidney infections in the past 7 years. I had one that landed me in the hospital this year and felt like I was going to die.

Think I am going to miss her meowing until I put the right song on during my PCS moves most.

I wouldn't worry about the cost. My coon hound was taking $350/month in meds for a heart condition for years before he passed. My pit had a $5K ACL surgery. My pit/akita mix takes $500 in meds ever couple months for thyroid and allergies. I owe each of them quite a few of my 43 years and would give anything I have for them. They've earned it.

I didn’t question the cost and didn’t hesitate to pay. She earned thousands we had spent on her over the past few years. I am more just shocked over the cost in different locations. The wife did just remind me in Oklahoma we did get the military discount so tgat could attest I some of the difference.

Absolutely understand ...No question of whether or not they deserve the care needed! The point I was trying to make is that sometimes a vet knows your attachment and they prey on that! They reccomend and even push surgeries that are not needed or warranted! They are very much like the health industry in this country. Very willing to give out medication or surgery for a fix instead of any alternative approach.

It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest. We address ourselves not to their humanity but to their self-love, and never talk to them of our own necessities, but of their advantages.
