Just wanted to share my “project” for the past few days.

Background: I love having an open air back, but hated the OEM soft top safari style with the top sticking out (you know the look, no windows just the top up). I also added a rear Molle panel that does not work with the oem softtop. Lastly, I had tube doors so I removed the oem top and door surrounds for most of the time.

I eventually sold the top and door surrounds on marketplace. I had a smittybilt skylights too but any tiny amount of rain would leak through the zippers. So I transitioned to a new top from best top. I also added doors back on since it’s the rainy season. That leaves a gap between rollbar and door.

so I bought door surrounds and decided to cut it up, particularly the rear area where the back protrudes and looks HIDEOUS. So I used a dremel for the first time in my life and cut away at it. I installed it but I had to cut a bit of the top of the surround because I have a mollepanel on the roof of the backseat. Anyway, it worked quite well albeit needs some touch ups.

The top covers the gap on the door surrounds so rain doesn’t get in as much as before. It obviously isn’t a perfect water proof seal but absolutely much more manageable!

I figured this is temporary until I find a top that is a little more permanent that I can open for open air access easily, much like oem but with no rear door surrounds sticking out far to where I would need to cut it again. Until then, this will do! Thoughts?

Hqve you looked at the fastback style tops and just taking the rear windwos out of that? That would leave you with an open air rear with the full cover soft top over the seats

Very good idea! I saw that extreme terrain sells one that is frameless. Will have to grab one once I have the funds. I think it fits what I need much better. Thanks!!

I use my hardtop freedom panels as a bikini top and really enjoy it.
Do they rattle or move around since they're not latched in the back?
