This is going to be a quick and dirty build journal in a 6x8 trailer for my jeep. I’ve always had a pickup truck except for a 2 year period where I drove a 4 door jk wrangler.

With that said I’m used to having access to the extra space a bed and tool box afford. I had this 6x8 trailer I updated a few years back with trailer brakes, led lights and an axle flip to fit some bigger tires (it was a mobile mechanic station for me, it had a generator, air compressor and all the goodies from when I owned an excavator).

Point of it all is I need something I can hook to for when I need to do truck stuff. I bolted the tool box from my old truck to it for tool storage but ended up with a tongue weight issue from how far forward the axle is when I put anything on the trailer.

I’m now in the process of moving the axle back roughly 20-22” to make for a more balanced load. Pics incoming as progress is made. So far I just have the rail braces cut away and fenders removed. Waiting on new leaf spring brackets to come in so I can weld them up.

On a side note does anyone know of a plug and play trailer brake controller for the JLs? I have the 7 pin connector from that factory just don’t have a brake controller.

Well gah dang that actually solves 2 problems for me. I was wanting to hide a usb charger in the dash for my dash mount phone charger. That’ll knock out both of those problems.

Glad I could help.

Just did this a little over a week ago. Redarc Tow-Pro Trail for Jeep Wrangler. Kit is plug and play into the factory harness under the dash.

It has a function for pulling a trailer off-road.

Any reason why you didn't extend the tongue and mount the tool box in front of the rail instead? Seems like that would accomplish the same thing with the tongue weight as moving the axle back, but also give you more usable space in the the trailer. Just a thought.

Would be an easier fix too. I should think.

I thought about that. Honestly it’s easier to just weld on new leaf spring brackets. Even in stock trim though I never cared for how far forward the axle is on this little trailer. In the future extending the tongue would be nice it just didn’t seem like the easier route with the way the ball mount is welded on.
