Just a few pics from BBNP last week. We had two JLURs, a JKUR, and a Toyota Land Cruiser in the group this trip.

Panther Junction had gasoline but the gas station store was closed. Rio Grande Village had gas. Never saw a line at either entrance station, but we were a week early for the spring break crowd. Saw zero other vehicles out in the wild along the back roads although most roadside campsites seemed to be full.

We didn't spend as much time as I would have preferred on dirt and gravel, but we had a couple of first timers in the group and there are things first timers just need to see. The highlight was the Thursday afternoon ride down to Solis. 25 miles of dirt and gravel down with Black Gap right in the middle of it. The new set-up on the Jeep made BG just another dirt road. I love this Jeep.

Wednesday, March 5:
  • DFW to Panther Junction
  • Grabbed roadside campsites for Thursday and Friday
  • Camped at Paint Gap 1 & 2 Wednesday night

Terrific pics. Definitely going back down there as soon as possible. I loved every bit of it. Ironically, our group when we went down had 2 JLs, 1 JK, and a Toyota 4Runner.

The tent is a Gazelle T4 that I bought pretty much brand new from another overlander that bought it then bought a RTT. I've had it for almost 5 years now.

I love it. Perfect for 2 people. 4 would be a stretch. Has stood up to some big weather. Just set it up properly and it's all good.

It will fit inside a JLU but I like to carry it on the Rhino Rack bars up top.

Awesome! I’ve never been but I’m hitting the road from Deep South Texas this Friday. I’d like to leave by 3 AM so I have time to check in and fuel up before heading down to do Black Gap then hit my camp spot before it gets too dark in Rio Grande Village campsite. Saturday do hot springs and Boquillas. Sound feasible?

after Boquillas I’m trying to find a campsite closer to Chisos as I’d like to do Lost Mine, Balanced Rock, and Window on Sunday. Any suggestions for a primitive campsite name/ road?

Monday either come home or check out Santa Elena and take it easy and drive home Tuesday.

going solo. One JL. Not worried about running Black Gap except my axle locker system service warning keeps going off. Already checked my connections and installed a new zlocker on front axle. Not gonna worry about it.

I'd recommend going for Santa Elena and hiking through the canyon. Here is my write-up of the Big Bend part of my Texas trip last year.

Just make sure you have some way to call for help if things go awry at Black Gap. We were out there for about 3 hours and never saw another person/vehicle. I have a Garmin Inreach so I wasn't so worried about it.

Friday and Saturday plan sounds good. Stop at Panther Junction as soon as you get to the park Friday and see what roadside campsites are going to be available for Saturday and Sunday nights. I'd suggest Rice Tank or Chilicotal for Saturday night if you are trying to get to Chisos early in the day to hike Lost Mine. It will take you 30-45 minutes to get from one of these sites to Chisos Basin depending on how you like to drive on dirt and gravel. Pick a site on the west side of the park for Sunday night if you want to hit Santa Elena Monday.

Boquillas - really enjoyed Jose Falcons. Sit out back. And bring a bunch of dollar bills. The kids will hit you up to buy something. We don't buy anything, but we give every kid $2 or $3.

If you want to hike for sunrise on Lost Mine, you probably need to be parked by 6am. Sounds crazy, but if you want to hike it you have to park first. Hiking Lost Mine, the Window, and Balanced Rock is an easy but full day.

I'd suggest fitting Old Ore Road in if you can. In my opinion Old Ore is the best unpaved drive in the park. It will take some time though.

Thanks for the info. To clarify I have a campground at Rio grande village for Friday and night a campground at Chisos for Sunday and Monday night. Saturday night is where I’m scrambling for a place since I couldn’t find anything in the campgrounds. So yes, figured I’d try Panther for a roadside campsite. I’d definitely look for Rice Tank or Chilitocal sites. I do plan to hike Lost Mine for sunrise (8 am) and plan to find parking by 430/5 am. I’m assuming they won’t allow me to park at the Lost Mine trailhead Saturday night…?

edit: been reading a lot on FB BB groups.
