It was 1981, it was dark and we were in a gravel pit in my brand new 1981 Toyota SR5, first year of the factory 4x4. It did not end well. Recovery the next morning involved my buddy's 1978 CJ7, a winch and a chain saw. After that, no more gravel pits!!!

My memory isn't the best these days but I'm gonna give it a go. Is that a Datsun? If it's not I'll need to phone a friend @2nd 392
Oh yeah. Definitely a Datsun. I found a shop that would do mudder re-caps for about $30 a tire. A little weight in the back and sometimes we wouldn't get stuck. Ha!

Now that era brings back some memories! It was about that year, or close to it I remember my childhood buddy Ron trying to kill his much older brother-in-law Jack out in the sand dunes near 1000 Palms/Palm Desert/Palm Springs before the I-10 freeway was built through that area.

Jack had built a sand buggy much as you have pictured, and I seem to remember it was Oldsmobile powered. As a carpenter Jack built a wooden sled to tow behind the buggy, and he had Ron, maybe 11 or 12 at the time, tow him across the dunes. I was riding shotgun, and I remember Jack's eyes must have been the size of silver dollars when he finally bailed off the sled to save his life as Ron accelerated faster and faster!

I wonder if Jack had anything to do with the naming of Oldsmobile Hill at Glamis! It was years later when I made my first runs up Competition Hill and Oldsmobile Hill in my 73 Power Wagon, pictured here back in camp:

Love that Power Wagon, Bob! Looks like a longbed Ute??? There is a Cali guy on RamchargerCentral Forum that still has his '73 single-cab short bed from buying it brand new, and it is sweet. I have a 4-door '73 Power Wagon I bought off C-List from out of AZ about 10 years ago, and love the thing.

On-topic, for me, it would have been going through the mud in local river bottoms in a friend's truck.

I grew up riding ATVs from age 4 with my family. Lots of hours doing that. Dad decided to sell it all and get into sleds/ Motorcycles, then eventually just motorcycles.

I missed it, so when my 92 Ford Explorer needed as much work as it was worth on trade, I traded it on my first Jeep: 98 TJ Sport, 4.0L, Manual transmission. That was 2003. First Jeep off road was in 2005 with my Jeep club- local trail that was a forest road. Could barely get it into 4Low. 31" BFG AT's, tow points, Fire extinguisher. I have pictures on a drive somewhere. one big rock where I got a little flex and thought it was so cool.

Yes, it is a long bed Utiline W200 I custom ordered new with a 2barrel 360 and 4 on the floor! It didn't take me long to desire more HP at Glamis, so I swapped in the somewhat built 340 out of my 70 Dart Swinger (Holley, Edelbrock, Racer Brown cam, ported heads, 13 to 1 TRW's, etc.) for double the HP. After a rod tried to sneak out the side of the block, it was time to build up the 68 440 a friend gave me out of a retired CHP car, plus a shortshaft 727 torqueflite replaced the manual trans. I eventually gave up on trips to the airport for green gas, and octane booster additives and transplanted in a detuned 440, which still sits in it today.

It has put in many miles offroad around the local mountains, deserts, plus the sand dunes at Glamis, Dumont Dunes, Oregon, and Pismo Beach, and it still carries battle scars from that long ago trip to the end of Sandstone Canyon in Anza Borrego!

As it sits in the driveway today, I haven't started it in several years, the wood bed and vinyl dash cover is rotted out, but a flush of the old gas in the system and a new battery should bring it back to life! It is actually still sitting on the original General tires it came from the factory with.

Congrats on your Power Wagon purchase!

Come to thinking about it, and in following the military theme, I did a little offroading in 1968 a few years before owning my first 4X4. I got to hang around with these guys. Notice there are no roads so must have been offroading:

First off-road experience was at the mall. They were redoing the parking lot and had torn things up pretty good. Some of the piles of dirt were 3-4 inches high. Had to drop her in to 4x4 low to clear those obstacles and having a spotter was really helpful. Luckily for me, the new Temu winch/bumper combo I just installed wasn't needed, but it was ready with 54,000 lbs of pulling force I was itching to try it.

Well you know what they say, recovery gear is more often needed to help others than help yourself. If you had waited around long enough, a soccer mom in a chevy equinox probably would have needed to use your winch, having incorrectly thought her AWD could handle those dirt piles. She probably didn't read the Trails Offroad report to know how difficult it had gotten. Stupid SxSs, chewing everything up, ruining it for the rest of us...

My first off road/4wd trip was also my first time leading a group. We went in to the Castle Dome Mtns of Az to go to Big Eye mine. All went fine and I had a great time. I've been back many times since. Driving a '97 TJ
